Filmmaker Gonzalo Suárez dies at 92 years old
The director, screenwriter, and writer received this year the Goya de Honor for a career of six decades in cinema and literature.
He was not on the list.
The filmmaker, writer, and screenwriter Gonzalo Suárez has passed away this Tuesday at the age of 92 in his home in Madrid, according to family sources reported to EFE. Suárez leaves a career marked by the transition between literature and cinema, with a body of work in which he explored different genres and forms of narration.
The Academy of Cinema awarded him the Goya de Honor 2026 in recognition of a career developed over more than six decades. The institution then highlighted his ability to "experiment with all genres and from all attitudes" and defined him as "a key man in Spanish culture of the last sixty years".
A trajectory between literature and cinema
Born in Oviedo in 1934, Suárez developed a career linked to both writing and cinema from his early works. Before establishing himself as a director, he worked as a writer and journalist and published stories and novels under the pseudonym Martín Girard.
His arrival in cinema was marked by a desire to move away from narrative conventions and explore different genres. Throughout his career, he directed films such as Ditirambo (1967), La Regenta (1974), Epílogo (1984), Remando al viento (1988), Don Juan en los infiernos (1991), or El detective y la muerte (1994).
He also brought to the big screen some of his own literary concerns and worked on adaptations of works by other authors.
The Goya de Honor in 2026
The Academy of Cinema decided to award him the Goya de Honor of 2026 in recognition of a career that spanned different stages and disciplines of Spanish culture.
The award particularly recognized his ability to move between cinema and literature and his commitment to experimentation. The Academy highlighted his journey as director, screenwriter, and writer, in addition to his contribution to Spanish culture over several decades.
Suárez received the award in an edition marked by the recognition of a generation of filmmakers who contributed to transforming Spanish cinema since the late sixties.
His passing brings an end to a career developed over more
than 60 years, in which he combined literary creation with cinema and explored
genres such as drama, thriller, comedy, and literary adaptation.
