Courtney Hall obit

Courtney Hall, former Chargers and Rice football player, dies

He was not on the list.

Courtney Hall, a former Rice football player who went on to play eight seasons in the NFL, has died. He was 52.

Hall, a Los Angeles native, graduated from high school at age 16 and was still a teenager when he began his senior season for the Owls.

A four-year letterman at Rice from 1985-88, Hall started all 44 games in his Owls career, He earned first-team All-Southwest Conference accolades in 1987 and 1988 and is the only Rice player on the conference's all-decade team for the 1980s. He also was a two-time winner of the George Martin award that goes to the team MVP.

Hall, who graduated from Rice with a double major in managerial studies and economics, was inducted into the Rice Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995 at age 27. He also was inducted into the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame in 2019.

After his time at Rice, Hall was a second-round pick of the Chargers in the 1989 draft and became an immediate starter at center as a rookie. He switched to left guard in his second season before moving back to center, where he played his final six seasons.

Hall was a captain on San Diego's 1994 AFC championship team that remains the franchise's only Super Bowl squad. He started all 118 games as a pro and was named as an alternate to the Pro Bowl four times. He also was voted to the 1989 NFL All-Rookie Team.

Hall had been working in venture capital after his playing days. He earned an MBA and law degree from the University of Chicago and co-founded Hillcrest Venture Partners in New York, where he served as managing director.

"We're incredibly saddened by news of Courtney's passing," the Chargers said in a statement. "His detractors thought he was too small for his position coming out of college but it turned out that his intelligence, hunger and toughness were what actually would set him apart from his peers. ... Courtney had so much more life to live and has been taken from us far too soon."

Tragically, Hall is the ninth player from that 1994 Chargers team to die at a young age. Eight of his 1994 teammates died before age 45.

His notable teammates include: Jim McMahon, David Archer, Marion Butts, Tim Spencer, Martin Blayless, Gill Byrd, Chris Bahr, Quinn Early, Bill Ray Smith Jr. Leslie O’Neal, Anthony Miller, Gary Plummer, Lee Williams, Junior Seau, John Friesz, John Carney, Rod Bernstine, Ronnie Harmon, Yancey Thigpen, Bob Gagliano, John Kidd, Stan Humphries, Brian Brennan, Trent Green, Chris Mims, Natrone Means, Darrien Gordon, Rodney Harrison, Tony Martin, Alfred Pupunu, Stan Brock, Darren Bennett, Sean Salisbury, Leonard Russell and Kevin Ross.

His coaches include: Dan Henning and Bobby Ross.

Hall is survived by his wife, LaShann DeArcy.

Claudia Barrett obit

 Actress Claudia Barrett has died

She was not on the list.

Palm Desert - Claudia Barrett, 91, local poet, watercolor artist, and former actor, died of natural causes at her home in Palm Desert on April 30, 2021. She was born Imagene Williams on Nov 3, 1929 in West Los Angeles to Arvilla Benton and Iman Williams, who ran a lunch counter near the Sepulveda VA, where the gassed veterans could taste Arvilla's extra spicy chili.

After Claudia's birth and the onset of the depression, the family moved to Van Nuys to start a business processing and wholesaling eggs, when the San Fernando Valley was still mostly rural. With the help of a large extended family they built a house and barn on an acre of what is now prime real estate. The family practiced Christian Science, so both boys were placed in the Medical Corps in WWII. Fain was killed in New Guinea. Arvilla and Iman divorced after the war.

Imagene was an extremely shy child, and her mother enrolled her in acting, dancing, and singing lessons to help her overcome this trait. The training was successful, and Imagene studied with Harriet Holt through high school, where she was also active in drama activities. She won Miss Sherman Oaks in a local beauty contest, and after graduating from Van Nuys High School, she studied at the Pasadena Playhouse for a year. That summer she acted in a little theater production, where in 2½ months she met, fell in love with, and married actor Alan Wells, then 24 to Imagene's 18. She and Alan divorced in 1957.

Her career took off. She got an agent, signed with Warner Brothers, and had her name changed to Claudia Barrett. She was one of the last actors in the studio system, where she studied acting, dancing, singing, beauty, diction, comportment, modeling, the works. She worked steadily for the next 15 years, mainly in television westerns. She could ride horses, thanks to a childhood in the Scouts and working as a counselor at a Girl Scout camp in her 20s and early 30s. She also taught method acting to young people in a drama school started by Mickey Rooney. To this day, she still receives fan mail and requests for photos.

Under her new name, Claudia Barrett, Warners gave her juicy secondary parts in several films, and freelance work with Republic Pictures earned her leads in a number of horse operas. In 1953 she starred in what would become her most noted picture, Robot Monster (1953), opposite George Nader. Released by third-string distributor Astor Pictures, the film is of an uncommonly low quality, and has generated a wide cult following with fans of bad and campy movies. Following this dubious project, Ms. Barret acted extensively on television for several years. After leaving show business entirely in the early 1960s, she spent 14 years working for AMPAS. More recently, she has kept busy as an artist, whose work is represented in galleries and has been commercially published.

Although she loved acting, by the mid 60s she realized her career wasn't advancing, so she switched to ancillary jobs in film distribution, publicity, and PR, but was not satisfied. However, in 1981 she found her dream job at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). She worked in the division that produced the awards for scientific and technical advances, got to go to the Academy Awards Show every year, and was able to give tickets to family members in the early years.

Shortly thereafter, Claudia moved to Palm Desert, where her best friend (briefly) lived. Claudia was a life-long learner. She was active in the Coachella Valley Watercolor Society. She joined the Rancho Mirage Public Library Poetry Group, wrote her memoirs, and published a book of her poetry and watercolors. She'd been a follower of Science of Mind for decades, and became active in what became the Center for Spiritual Living, where she volunteered in the gift shop and studied topics including Emerson.

Claudia was loved by many people, and kept friends for life. She was known for her sweet personality, kindness, and cheerfulness. She was an excellent and thoughtful gift giver who loved Christmas and other holidays with her family.

Claudia was predeceased by her parents, Iman Williams and Arvilla Benton Williams Carson, her brothers Fain and Bob Williams, Bob's wife Jeanne, their son Bruce, her special aunt Bernice Retlaw Warner, cousin Marijac Retlaw Comer, lifelong friend and teacher Harriett Holt, and many other family and friends.

She is survived by her niece Bonnie Lloyd (Bob, stepson Brendan), nephew Ron (Jackie, children Alexis, Ronnie, Chris, Pat, Melanie, and their children), numerous cousins and friends.

Billie Hayes Dies: Wicked Witchiepoo Of ‘H.R. Pufnstuf’ Was 96

She was not on the list.

Billie Hayes, whose portrayal of the flamboyantly and comically wicked witch Witchiepoo on the 1969-70 Saturday morning live-action children’s classic H.R. Pufnstuf, died of natural causes April 29 at Cedar’s Hospital in Los Angeles. She was 96.

Her death was announced by her family.

A Broadway veteran by the time she reached national fame as the flute-stealing nemesis to a psychedelic dragon, Hayes had starred as Mammy Yokum in both the Broadway and film versions of the popular late-1950s musical Lil’ Abner. She’d made her Broadway debut in New Faces of 1956 along with an ensemble that included actress Maggie Smith.

Following a couple of guest appearances on episodic TV in 1967 – including a Mammy Yokum-type matriarch in the “Hillbilly Honeymoon” episode of The Monkees – Hayes endeared herself to a generation of glued-to-the-tube Saturday morning viewers in 1969 as the eccentrically costumed, ever-cackling and always bumbling Witchiepoo (full name: Wilhelmina W. Witchiepoo).

With a performance panache that was over-the-top even by the wacky standards of the Sid and Marty Krofft universe of costumed creatures, Hayes was an immediate scene-stealer. Series-stealer, actually: Though Witchiepoo was the H.R. Pufnstuf villain, intent on stealing the magical, talking Freddy the Flute as if he were a pair of ruby slippers, Hayes’ wildly entertaining vaudeville, slapstick style had legions of young viewers rooting her on to a victory that never came. “Why me?,” she’d whine or sob after the inevitable backfiring of her latest evil scheme.

Born in Du Quoin, Illinois, Hayes began her show business career at age 9, dancing professionally in local nightclubs. While still in high school, she joined the fourteen-piece regional orchestra of Vince Genovese, and performed solo in her teens in Chicago and throughout the Midwest.

After moving to New York, Hayes performed selections from her nightclub singing-and-dancing routine in an audition for famed theater impresario J.J. Shubert, who was so taken with her comic and musical talents he cast her in principal roles of three roadshow operettas: Student Prince, The Merry Widow and Blossom Time.

Soon enough she was co-starring with fellow newcomer Paul Lynde in the New York revue What’s New, which led to her Broadway debut in Leonard Sillman’s New Faces show. She then took over the role of Lil’ Abner‘s Mammy Yokum from the original cast’s Charlotte Rae, finding herself alongside another up-and-comer in the replacement cast named Valerie Harper.

Hayes, with old-age make-up, a white wig and a long-stemmed pipe, would reprise the role in Paramount’s 1959 film version and, in 1971, a TV-movie adaptation. She’d return to the stage in the late 1960s as the character Minnie Fay in the national touring company of Hello, Dolly! starring Betty Grable.

After her 1969 arrival in the destined-for-cult-classic Sid and Marty Krofft series, which also starred Jack Wild (Oliver!) as the on-the-run Dorothy Gale-stand-in Jimmy and, providing the voice of Pufnstuf the dragon, Lennie Weinrib (actor Roberto Gamonet was inside the puffy, full-body green-and-yellow costume), Hayes had found what would be her signature role. She returned as the character in the 1970 feature film adaptation Pufnstuf, along with Wild, Martha Raye and, in her sole feature role, “Mama” Cass Elliot (as Witch Hazel).

Hayes even reprised the role in 1976 on the ABC Halloween special of her old friend Paul Lynde, appearing with The Wizard of Oz‘s Margaret Hamilton in a comedy sketch that revealed the sisterly bond between the two famous witches.

The cancelation of H.R. Pufnstuf in 1970 led to yet another Krofft casting, this time in the dual role of Witchiepoo and the kindlier Weenie the Genie in Lidsville (1971-72), with Charles Nelson Reilly taking the show’s chief villain spot as magician Horatio J. Hoodoo.

Hayes had a long and busy subsequent TV career in voice roles – The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries, The Flintstones Comedy Show, Trollkins, The Real Ghostbusters, Rugrats, Transformers: Rescue Bots, among many others – and she appeared in a recurring role on General Hospital in the early 1980s as a street-wise international spy named Agent Brighton O’Reilly.

Offscreen, Hayes founded the Los Angeles-based animal rescue nonprofit organization Pet Hope, a cause she had championed since adopting a puppy abandoned in the basement of Broadway’s St. James Theatre during the run of Lil’ Abner.

Hayes is survived by niece Nancy Powers, nephews Tom Brosch, Louie Brosch and Guy Brosch; their spouses; and several great-nieces and -nephews. The family requests donations in lieu of flowers to Pet Hope.
