Tony Gatlif Dies: ‘Gadjo Dilo’ Director Whose Work Celebrated Roma Culture Was 77

Director Tony Gatlif, who was known for films such as Gadjo Dilo exploring Roma culture, died in the Southern French town of Arles on September 3. He was 77.

The director was born Michel Boualem Dahmani in Algiers on September 10, 1948, to a Kabyle father and mother of Andalusian and Gitane origin.

He had a difficult childhood, growing up in poverty in slums on the outskirts of the Algerian capital, which he quit for France at age 14 in the early 1960s. After a period of precarity and petty criminality, a meeting with his idol, actor Michel Simon, opened the door to a dramatic arts course in Germain-en-Laye outside of Paris, after the latter wrote a letter of recommendation.

While gaining experience as an actor, Gatlif gradually started creating his own original work based on his own experiences and exploring the culture of his Roma origins.

He broke into directing in 1975 with La tête en Ruines, followed by the Spain-shot and set drama Corre Gitano, about a young gypsy man accused of a crime he did not commit. It was the first among a series of films exploring the culture and challenges of Europe’s Roma people.

In 1992, he won Cannes Un Certain Regard prize for Latcho Drom, a documentary about gypsy music.

He followed this with one of this best known films, Gadjo Dilo (The Crazy Stranger), starring Romain Duris as a Frenchman who travels to Romania in search of Roma singer, whose voice he has heard on tapes recorded by his late father.   The film premiered at the Locarno Film Festival in 1997 where it won the Silver Leopard.

Gatlif would go on to win Best Director in Cannes in 2004, with the autobiographical drama Exils, reuniting him with Duris and also featuring Lubna Azabal in the cast.

Subsequent works included Korkoro (2009), The Outraged (2012), Geronimo (2014), Djam (2017), Tom Medina (2021) and Ange (2025).

Gloria Steinem Dies: Feminist Icon And Activist & Co-Founder Of Ms. Magazine Was 92

Gloria Steinem passed away yesterday.

The pro-abortion “feminist”, despite not believing in God, had inestimable value not given to her by woman, man or governmental institutions. The esteemed author has met the Author of Life and will be held to account for her every word and deed.

Showing that abortion advocacy is one and the same with environmental radicalism, Steim opined in a 2017 interview that birthing children is the “fundamental cause of climate change“. Her solution? Abortion. She was one of many in a long line of environmental evangelist hucksters who’ve made the same doomsday proclamations of overpopulation and have been trounced by actual science.

Throughout her life she proudly paraded her own abortion. She famously wore a t-shirt proclaiming “I had an abortion”. In 1957, she paid an abortionist to kill the child of her once-fiancée whom she deeply loved. Sadly, Steinem passed away living a fake feminist lie that never recognized the deepest and most unique treasure of womanhood: motherhood.

She was a child of divorce and had to care for her mentally ill mother. She was neglected and harmed by her parents’ broken marriage. In her own words: “And if you’re treated badly, you come to feel you’re a bad person, and to some extent, even a very good thing like being a social activist can be a drug, you know, that keeps you from going back and looking at yourself. You keep trying to fill up this emptiness, which, of course, can’t be filled up with anything external.”

That void was filled by fake feminism.

Even the New York Times admitted this tragic truth about Steinem: “Her dysfunctional youth — mothering her mother — also colored her view of marriage and children, both of which she viewed as a trap. That fear kept her from settling down.” She was a lifelong activist who remained childless. Her activism centered on celebrating the demise of tens of millions of girls (and boys, of course) who had equal worth to her yet she refused to see their equality. All the accolades of Gloria Steinem being a history maker illuminate fake feminism’s biggest irony: You can’t make history unless you’re born.

She was “pro-choice” when it came to her religious worldview. Tragically, throughout her famed life, she chose to reject the One who created her. (Although our hope is that she made an eternal decision, in her last moments, making Christ her Savior.) Last night, she came face to face with the God who could’ve filled that painful void and turned her lifelong brokenness into breakthrough.

Gloria Steinem, the American feminist icon and founder of Ms. magazine, died Wednesday, September 2, at her home in New York City. She was 92.

Her death was announced in a joint post on her Instagram account and The Gloria Steinem Foundation. A cause of death was not disclosed, but the statement said she “passed passed away peacefully at her home in New York City, surrounded by some of the many who loved her.”

“Gloria’s greatest gift was her ability to listen to others, to make others feel seen and heard. Her words, actions, and example gave people permission to be their truest selves,” the post read. “Gloria lived true to her independent spirit, always with curiosity and a great sense of humor.” Read the full note below.

In becoming one of the most-listened to voices in U.S. feminism – perhaps at times even the most-listened to – Steinem had spent most of her career in journalism. Among her most notable early stories was an exposé on Hugh Hefner’s Playboy empire, during which she went undercover as a Playboy Bunny to uncover the conditions facing the young women.

The story caused a huge debate in American society, though Steinem later said she regretted the assignment as the association blighted the rest of her career.

She went on to become a founder of Ms., which was among the first magazines to address women as more than housewives and homemakers in America. Steinem also was an early supporter of Women’s Action Alliance, a group focused on combating sexism.

With her trademark aviator shades, long, blonde-streaked hair and a style of dressing that typified the ’70s era’s New York chic, she became a visible emblem of the Second Wave movement and a key advocate for abortion rights, having been inspired by women speaking out on the Roe vs Wade case, in which the Supreme Court made abortion a constitutional right. The right was repealed in 2022, prompting Steinem to write in an email to the AP, “Either our control over our own bodies is equal, regardless of sex or race, or we’re not living in a democracy.

“Gloria was, at heart, an optimist,” said Hillary Clinton on today’s CBS Mornings. “Her activism was rooted in optimism. And that’s a moral choice, and she made it every day.”

Journalist Christiane Amanpour wrote on X that Steinem “will go down in history as one of the most important activists of all time, leading a movement for the equality of half the world: its women.”

Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, said on X, “Celebrating the life and legacy of my friend and mentor, Gloria Steinem, and also grateful to know that in these last few weeks and days she knew exactly how loved and admired she was.”

As the nearly unrivaled face of Second Wave Feminism, Steinem over the decades appeared on hundreds of talk shows hosted by everyone from Dick Cavett, Johnny Carson and David Frost to Howard Stern and Bill Maher. A documentary about Steinem’s life, Gloria: In Her Own Words, launched in 2011. Her memoir, My Life on the Road, was the basis for Julie Taymor biopic The Glorias, and she appeared on screen on the likes of 60 Minutes, The Daily Show and Charlie Rose and even in scripted series The Good Wife and And Just Like That… as herself.

Jean-Paul Rappeneau Dies: ‘Cyrano de Bergerac’ Director Was 94

French director and screenwriter Jean-Paul Rappeneau, who was best known internationally for the 1990 Oscar-nominated drama Cyrano de Bergerac, died on September 2 his family has announced. He was 94.

Born on April 8, 1932 in the town of Auxerre in central France, Rappeneau’s career spanned more than 50 years of French cinema history.

His early screenwriting credits include Louis Malle’s Zazie in the Metro ((1960)and A Very Private Affair (1962) as well as Philippe de Broca’s classic thriller That Man From Rio starring Jean-Paul Belmondo.

He broke into feature film directing in 1966 with A Matter of Resistance, a romantic comedy set on the eve of France’s World War Two liberation starring Catherine Deneuve.

The pair would work together again on his 1975 film Le Sauvage, co-starring Yves Montand as a man living a solitary on a Caribbean island who becomes entangled with a runaway bride.

Other directorial credits include All Fired Up (1982) and Horseman on the Roof (1995). He is best known internationally, however, for his big screen adaptation of Edmond Rostand’s 1897 stage play Cyrano de Bergerac starring Gerard Depardieu in the titular role.

After world premiering in 1990 in Cannes, where Depardieu won Best Actor, the film enjoyed a buzzy awards season garnering five nominations in the lead up to the 63rd Academy Awards, including for Best Actor and Best Foreign Language Film. It missed out on both prizes, but won Best Costume Design for Franca Squarciapino.

Rappeneau’s last feature-length directorial credit was the comedy drama Families starring

Mathieu Amalric as a Shanghai-based French financier who returns home to find the family mansion is being sold off.

Victor Miller Dies: ‘Friday The 13th’ Screenwriter Was 86

 

He was not on the list.

Victor Miller, the screenwriter behind Friday the 13th, has died. He was 86.

Miller’s son Ian confirmed his father had died on Monday, August 31, but didn’t reveal the cause of death.

“Yesterday my father, Victor Miller, went to his final reward,” read the Instagram post in honor of the screenwriter. “He was almost always the smartest, funniest person in whatever room he was in. He inspired in me, and many others, a love of photography, music, and storytelling.”

The post continued, “He is survived by his wife, two sons, and his grandson. He had a helluva run and will be missed dearly.”

Ian said that a celebration of Miller’s life will be held in November, “on Friday the 13th, of course.”

Miller wrote the screenplay for the 1980 film directed by Sean S. Cunningham that would go on to spawn multiple sequels. Before the horror film, Miller co-wrote the family comedy Manny’s Orphans (1978) with Steve Miner, which Cunningham also directed. In 1978, worked with Cunningham, writing the sports comedy Here Come the Tigers under the pseudonym Arch McCoy.

The screenwriter would work with Cunningham once again after Friday the 13th on the thriller A Stranger Is Watching (1982). Other film credits include Getting In (1994), Jury Duty (1995), Rock, Paper, Scissors (2017), The Once and Future Smash (2022), and the short film Sweet Revenge (2025), among others.

Miller also wrote for television, becoming an Associate Head Writer on the daytime drama One Life to Live from 1982 to 1984. In 1984, he joined All My Children in the same role and later did the same with Guiding Light, Another World, and General Hospital. He won several Daytime Emmys for his work on All My Children in 1985, 1988, and 1998.

Miller’s legacy will live on in Crystal Lake, which is the A24 series based on the Friday the 13th franchise and a prequel to the film Miller wrote. The series will premiere on Peacock on October 15.
