Vector Lovers, UK IDM artist and Soma Records affiliate, dies

The Reading-born DJ and producer's output spanned IDM, electro and ambient.

Veteran British DJ and producer Martin Wheeler, AKA Vector Lovers, has died.

The Black Dog broke the news on Instagram today, September 21st, paying tribute to a "lovely bloke" who will "be missed by many." No cause of death was disclosed.

Reading-born Wheeler began producing under the Vector Lovers alias in the early '00s, incorporating elements of IDM, electro, ambient and experimental electronic music. He initially released records through his own Iwari label, including his self-titled debut album in 2004 and follow-up album Capsule For One the next year.

He subsequently joined the roster of Glasgow label Soma Records, where he put out more albums including Afterglow (2007), Vector Lovers (2008) and iPhonica (2013). Wheeler also released music under aliases including Rosenbaum and Badly Born Droid.

Capsule For One was reissued by Lapsus Records in 2022 as a special edition featuring remixes by Wheeler and two previously unreleased tracks. Outside of his own project, Wheeler worked with Everything But The Girl's Tracey Thorn on her 2007 album Out Of The Woods, contributing production and programming to the record.

He continued to release music as Vector Lovers throughout the '10s and '20s, including a series of EPs and archival releases, and DJ'd at clubs such as Fuse, The Arches and Electrowerkz.
