Former Broncos, Giants wide receiver dies at 57 after cancer battle

Arthur Marshall, the former University of Georgia wide receiver who spent five seasons in the NFL with the Denver Broncos and New York Giants, died Wednesday at 57 after a battle with stomach cancer, according to multiple reports from his home town.
Marshall was a standout at Hephzibah High School before
becoming one of Georgia’s most productive big-play receivers of the late 1980s
and early 1990s.
Marshall entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with Denver in 1992. He spent two seasons with the Broncos before joining the Giants in 1994, remaining with New York through the 1996 season.
In 68 regular-season games, Marshall caught 87 passes for
1,267 yards and four touchdowns. He also contributed as a runner (14 carries,
65 yards) and returner (59 punt returns for 590 yards; 23 kickoff returns for
381 yards). His best season came as a rookie in Denver, when he caught 26
passes for 493 yards and a touchdown.
Marshall also left the NFL with an unusual place in its
record book. While with Denver, he completed both of his career passing
attempts for touchdowns. One was an 81-yard touchdown pass to Cedric Tillman
against Dallas in 1992, a record for the longest touchdown pass thrown by a
non-quarterback at the time. His other completion, in 1993, went 30 yards to
Derek Russell.
Marshall played for the Bulldogs from 1988-91 and finished
with 67 receptions for 1,186 yards, an average of 17.7 yards per catch, and
four touchdowns. As a senior, he caught 39 passes for 524 yards on a Georgia
team that went 9-3 and finished No. 19 in the Associated Press poll. He also
returned 15 kickoffs for 347 yards that season.
Marshall’s post-football life included a serious legal
setback.
In 2009, federal authorities arrested him on charges
involving bank fraud, mail fraud and money laundering, alleging that he had
used false information to obtain more than $1 million in real-estate loans.
In 2010, he pleaded guilty to two counts of bank fraud and
was sentenced to 69 months in federal prison and five years of supervised
release. He was also ordered to pay more than $3.6 million in restitution.
