Remembering Bebe Shopp, Miss America 1948
She was not on the list.
October 4, 2025 — The Miss America Organization is deeply saddened to share the passing of Beatrice “BeBe” Shopp Waring, Miss America 1948.
Born in Illinois and raised in Hopkins, Minnesota, BeBe made history at age 18 as the first Miss Minnesota to earn the title of Miss America. A gifted vibraharp player, she used her music to inspire others and helped pave the way for future contestants to showcase their unique talents. With her scholarship, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in percussion from the Manhattan School of Music.
BeBe remained actively involved with the Miss America Organization for 78 years, serving as a judge, emcee, and mentor to generations of young women. She was also a proud supporter of U.S. troops throughout her life and was especially honored by her time touring with the USO in Afghanistan.
Following her year of service, BeBe devoted her life to her faith, community, and family. She was a devoted wife, loving mother of four daughters, grandmother to ten, and great-grandmother to thirteen.
BeBe’s legacy continues to shine through the Miss America sisterhood she helped shape. We were deeply privileged to have her join us one final time for Miss America 2026, where she graced the runway and reminded us all of the enduring spirit of the Miss America tradition.
We mourn the loss of a remarkable woman but celebrate a beautiful life and lasting impact. Our hearts are with her family and friends during this time. BeBe embodied everything a Miss America should be and will be forever cherished as Miss America 1948.
