Greek actress Anna Kyriakous dies at age 96

Renowned Greek actress Anna Kyriakous has passed away at the age of 96. The veteran performer leaves behind a distinguished career in theater and film.

A sad announcement was made by Spyros Mpimpilas, informing his online followers that renowned actress Anna Kyriakou has passed away. Her loss has deeply affected the artistic community. The beloved actress, who lived a full life, appeared in numerous Greek films and television series, most notably as ‘Bebeka’ in the iconic show ‘Three Graces’. Anna Kyriakou’s funeral will take place on Wednesday, October 15 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Cemetery of Athens. ‘A loving farewell to our cherished Anna Kyriakou, who left us this morning at the age of 96. A warm, gifted, and talented figure in the arts who graced our theater, cinema, and television for over 70 years… The legendary Aunt Bebeka from Three Graces, adored by audiences, and the last surviving star from the great Vasileios Logothetidis’ legendary films. We in the theater world and her fans will always keep her in our hearts. She recently completed her memoirs. We will bid her farewell on Wednesday, October 15 at 11 a.m. at the First Cemetery of Athens. Our deepest condolences to our friend, her beloved son, Christos,’ wrote Spyros Mpimpilas. Born in Athens on January 17, 1929, Anna Kyriakou studied at the National Theatre’s Drama School and later at Charles Dullin’s school in Paris from 1954 to 1956. She began her theatrical career as a teenager at the REX Theater with Marika Kotopouli’s troupe in ‘Carmen’. She went on to collaborate with major theater companies, including those of Manolides-Pappas, Vasilis Logothetidis, Katerina, and Manos Katrakis. During the 1953–1954 season, she worked with Dimitris Myrat’s company. After returning from Paris, she starred in productions with troupes led by Dinus Iliopoulos, Mimis Fotopoulos, and Alekos Alexandrakis. In 1959, she headlined at Dimitris Rondiris’ ‘Piraeus Theater’ in ‘The Innkeeper’, ‘The Marriage of Figaro’, and ‘Electra’, followed by a two-decade-long collaboration with the National Theatre, where she played leading roles in 34 plays between 1960 and 1981. She also made a significant mark in Greek cinema, appearing in legendary films such as ‘Zorba the Greek’ (1964), ‘Safe Sex’ (1999), and ‘Oxygen’ (2003). Younger audiences came to know her through her TV roles, especially as ‘Bebeka’ in MEGA Channel’s classic series ‘Three Graces’.
