Beloved New Orleans singer Lillian Boutte has died

She was not on the list.

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Dynamic and beloved New Orleans singer Lillian Boutte has passed away. Her family confirmed she died on Friday following a lengthy illness.

After a stellar career stateside, Boutte found success abroad, spending over 30 years living and performing in Europe. During that time, she brought many New Orleans musicians overseas, spreading our city’s music, but also exposing the artists to experiences outside of the city.

Niece and caretaker Tanya Boutte spoke of the impact Lillian had on the musicians she helped mold, “The Boss, The Queen. She was in charge of everything, driving, booking, singing. She wanted to cook. She wanted to be the mama. She was everything.”

Boutte is the older sister of singer John, and relative to the many performers in the musical Boutte family. In 2017, WGNO had the chance to talk to family members, who’d moved her back home as she became ill.

Cousin Vance Vaucresson stated at the time, “Lillian has cared for and has guided and has reached back and brought the next generation in the musical fold. Now she’s at a place where many of our seniors, when they get to that place in life where they’re now slowing down, retiring, getting ill a little bit earlier than needed.”

Lillian Boutte was 75 years old.  Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
