Sonny King Obit

Wrestler Sonny King Has Died

He was not on the list.

He competed in the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF), where he won the WWWF Tag Team Championship. His real name was Larry Johnson.

Johnson began his career as a professional boxer, but later turned to professional wrestling after befriending Ernie Ladd. Johnson initially turned down the offer from Jack Britton to join the sport, but later tried it anyway. He began his training in Detroit. He later worked in Pittsburgh and Ontario.

In 1972, he teamed with Chief Jay Strongbow to win the World Wide Wrestling Federation's World Tag Team Championship from Baron Mikel Scicluna and King Curtis Iaukea. After a month, they lost the title to the team of Professor Tanaka and Mr. Fuji. Through 1973 and 1974, he worked in NWA Mid Atlantic where he most often fought Johhny Valentine and Swede Hanson.

Johnson won the NWA Alabama Heavyweight Championship in Alabama in March 1977. In 1978 and 1979, Johnson worked in Memphis as a manager to Jos Leduc and Ron Bass. He also feuded with Jerry Lawler for the Southern Championship. While with Championship Wrestling from Florida, he traded the Florida version of the NWA Brass Knuckles Championship with Killer Karl Kox.

While partnering with The Angel in the Continental Wrestling Association in 1980, he won the AWA Southern Tag Team Championship. While waiting for a card to start in the Carolinas, he noticed a male force his way into an arena past an elderly security guard. When Johnson confronted the man, he was stabbed numerous times, during which he suffered a punctured lung and the knife nicked his heart. Johnson was rushed into emergency surgery. Years later, Johnson recounted the surgeon having to massage his heart outside of his body to keep him alive. He retired in the mid-1980s.

Johnson grew up in North Carolina. After retiring from wrestling, he worked in a junkyard in South Florida, buying and selling car parts. His son played football for the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Obi Ndefo Dies: ‘Dawson’s Creek’ & ‘Stargate SG-1’ Actor Was 51

He was not on the list.

Obi Ndefo, the actor known for his roles in Dawson’s Creek and Stargate SG-1 has died. He was 51.

The actor’s sister Nkem Ndefo announced her brother’s death Saturday night on Facebook with a throwback photo of herself and Obi. A cause of death has not yet been released.

“Heartbroken at the loss of my younger brother, and knowing he’s finally at peace,” wrote Nkem in the post.

Obi’s death comes five years after he lost both his legs in a hit-and-run accident in Los Angeles. He had since been focused on his health and recovery, remaining active as a yoga teacher over the years.

“This is just so horrendous what happened to me, why would I compound this by feeling bad about it?” he told the Los Angeles Times of his outlook after the accident.

After graduating from Yale University’s drama school, Obi began acting in various TV roles on episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, The Wayans Bros., The Jamie Foxx Show and 3rd Rock from the Sun.

The actor’s most memorable performance came as Bodie Wells, the brother-in-law to Katie Holmes‘ Joey Potter on Dawson’s Creek, a role in which he appeared from 1998 to 2002. His co-star Mary-Margaret Humes shared a tribute to Instagram after Obi’s death.

‘These words don’t come easy,” she captioned the post. “It’s hard for me to conceive that you have left us, my dear friend. You always were and always will be a bright shining light. What an example of pure unfiltered love and tenacity you set as you faced life’s challenges of recent. I will cherish all of our messages of love and support to each other over the past few years. Rest in peace sweet warrior.”

Obi’s other credits include episodes of Angel, Star Trek: Voyager, Crossing Jordan, NYPD Blue, The West Wing and NCIS: Los Angeles. The actor also founded the non-profit Arts Alliance for Humanity, which supports arts education in public schools and communities.

Danielle Moore obit

Crazy P frontwoman Danielle Moore dies aged 52

She was not on the list.

Danielle Moore, frontwoman of British electronic group Crazy P, has died at the age of 52.

The band shared the "unbelievable and shocking news" in a statement posted on Instagram.

"We are devastated to announce the unbelievable and shocking news that our beautiful Danielle Moore has died in sudden and tragic circumstances," the post read.

The post did not detail how Moore died but paid tribute to the singer who "lived a life driven by love compassion community and music".

"We cannot believe the news ourselves and we know it will be the same for all of you. She gave us so much and we love her so much," it continued.

"Our hearts are broken. We need time to process that this has happened.

"Danielle lived a life driven by love compassion community and music. She lived the biggest of lives. We will miss her with all our hearts."

Moore joined Crazy P in 2002, alongside bassist Tim Davies and Mav Kendricks on keys - the outfit then released seven studio albums.

The group recently supported Róisín Murphy on tour. Writing on social media, Murphy paid tribute to Moore as "an amazing person and an amazing singer, performer and songwriter".

"I know there will be a great sense of loss and mourning across our community,” she posted, alongside a photo of them together.

"She touched everybody she met with light and love. Sending sincerest condolences to those friends and family closest to her. I, like so many, loved and admired her."

The Times’ Ed Potton previously described Crazy P's sound as a "tight blend of funk, house and disco".

And Moore was "a frontwoman who combines the voice of a soul diva, the moves of a burlesque dancer and the wit of a nightclub compere", he wrote.

Fatman Scoop obit

Rapper Fatman Scoop dies at 53 after medical emergency during CT performance

He was not on the list.

Isaac Freeman III, better known as "Fatman Scoop," died at age 53 after suffering a medical emergency during his performance at Hamden Town Center Park on Friday, according to his tour manager.

The New York City native collapsed on stage while performing and received CPR before being transported to a hospital via ambulance.

"It is with profound sadness and very heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of the legendary and iconic FatMan Scoop," Freeman's family said in a statement posted to Hamden Mayor Lauren Garrett's Facebook page. "Last night, the world lost a radiant soul, a beacon of light on the stage and in life. FatMan Scoop was not just a world class performer, he was a father, brother, uncle and a friend. He was the laughter in our lives, a constant source of support, unwavering strength, and courage."

DJ and producer Birch Michael, also known as Pure Cold, who identified himself as Freeman's tour manager, initially posted about Freeman's death on Facebook and Instagram Saturday morning.

"I am honestly lost for words," Michael said. "You took me all over the world and had me performing alongside you on some of the biggest and greatest stages on this planet, the things you taught me have truely made me the man I am today."

Freeman's booking agency that he worked with for 15 years, MN2S, released a statement about Freeman's death at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

"I spoke to him just a few days ago, and he was in such good spirits," Sharron Elkabas, Freeman's representative at MN2S, said in the statement. "It's hard to believe he is no longer with us."

Reminisce Festival, a UK festival featuring performances from DJs around the world, also confirmed that Freeman died. Freeman was scheduled to perform at this year's Reminisce Festival on Sept. 7.

"His absence will be profoundly felt by everyone," the festival said in an Instagram post. "He was not just one of our most popular performers, he was a cherished member of the Reminisce family."

Freeman was known for his guest performances on the Grammy award-winning single "Lose Control" by Missy Elliot and "It's Like That" by Mariah Carey. He also collaborated with artists such as LL Cool J, the Fugees, Timbaland & Magoo and Skrillex throughout his career.

"FatMan scoop was known to the world as the undisputed voice of the club," his family said in their statement. "His music made us dance and embrace life with positivity. His joy was infectious and the generosity he extended to all will be deeply missed but never forgotten."

In a statement, Garrett, Hamden's mayor, said Freeman was a "wonderful performer with a wide following as evidenced by the thousands of fans that came to see what would be his last performance at Hamden Town Center Park." She expressed gratitude for the audience members and Hamden paramedics that "attempted to offer life-saving assistance."

"For anyone who is having difficulty processing and mourning Isaac’s loss particularly after witnessing the tragedy unfold at town center park, we will be hosting grief counseling with our social worker," Garrett added.

Ronald Huggins, New Haven's deputy director of youth services, had been friends with Freeman for more than 10 years, he wrote in a Facebook post Saturday morning. Huggins shared various photos of himself and Freeman, including one that appeared to show the two of them standing on stage during Friday night's concert in Hamden.

"There wasn’t a time I called that you didn’t answer!" Huggins wrote. "I remember saying bro come to Hillhouse let’s chill with some of the kids and you did it with no hesitation. I am blessed and honored to have had you as a friend!"

Freeman originally was scheduled to perform in Hamden in July as part of the town's Free Summer Concert Series, but the show was postponed to Friday night. He also took the stage at New Haven's Westville Music Bowl in 2021.

NYU professor and author of "God Save The Queens: The Essential History of Women In Hip-Hop" Kathy Iandoli shared her memories of Freeman on X, formerly known as Twitter. She said that Freeman was "one of the nicest guys."

"For so many of us who were trying to make our way in the hip-hop industry in New York City, he was very welcoming and he was just really supportive of the generations that came after him," Iandoli said.

Iandoli said that for many people growing up in New York City, Freeman's voice was "probably the most prominent," as his music was heard on radio stations and in bars and clubs throughout the city.

"His was a voice and a sound that echoed through generations and decades," Iandoli said. "That's just the power that he had."
