Chiefs mourn the passing of Super Bowl IV champion Jim Kearney

He was not on the list.

The Kansas City Chiefs lost a member of their Super Bowl IV roster this week when legendary safety Jim Kearney passed away on Tuesday, August 6 at the age of 81.

Kearney was originally selected by the Detroit Lions with the 151st pick of the 1965 NFL draft after he excelled as a collegian at Prairie View A&M. He was born in Wharton, Texas.

He played in Detroit for two seasons before joining the Chiefs in 1967, where he helped lead the team to its first Super Bowl victory in 1969 before finishing his career with the New Orleans Saints.

In his playing days, Kearney was a well-known ball hawk in Kansas City’s secondary, and led the league in both interceptions for touchdowns and yards on interception returns in 1972.

The Chiefs posted a heartfelt remembrance of Kearney on Twitter, sending thoughts and prayers to his family.

After retiring from the league in 1976, Kearney moved back to the Kansas City area, coaching little league football and teaching science at Washington High School.
