Russell Stone obit

R&J Stone “We Do It” singer Russell Stone dies

He was not on the list.

(August 21, 2024) While they were not as big over here in the States, the duo of Russell Oliver Stone and Joanne Stone – better known as R&J Stone – had a strong following around the world in the late 70s, particularly for their smash hit ballad “We Do It.” Today, we’re sad to inform SoulTrackers of the passing of Russell Stone.

Russell’s son James posted the sad news today on social media:

To all his family and friends I am deeply saddened to let you all know that Dad passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of the morning. For those of you that know him, you know his journey is just beginning.

Before stepping into the spotlight on their own, the pair honed their craft as members of James Last’s backing choir, where they cultivated the rich harmonies that would define their sound. Their big break came in 1976 with the smash hit “We Do It,” a love anthem penned by Stone that resonated deeply with listeners. Produced by Phil Swern, the track climbed the charts and hit the top 10 in several countries around the world.

However, the duo’s success was short-lived. After their hit, Russell made the decision to step back from singing, choosing instead to focus on writing and producing for Joanne. Unfortunately, their follow-up album failed to capture the same magic, and although a third album was recorded, it never saw the light of day.

Tragedy struck in 1979 when Joanne passed away from a brain tumor, leaving a void in the music world. Russell, who later overcame his battle with alcoholism, found his way back to music after years away from the industry. He released three solo albums—Love Aspects (2013), Groove Aspects (2014), and Devotional Aspects (2016).

Today we celebrate the brief but impactful musical period of R&B Stone as well as the life of Russell Stone. Rest in peace.
