Richard Brickhouse Has Died

Richard Fleming Brickhouse, a well-known racecar driver passed away on July 24 , 2026 at the age of 87 at his home in Rocky Point.
He was born October 27, 1938 in Wilmington, North Carolina, the son of James Albert Brickhouse and Idell Woodcock Brickhouse. In addition to his parents Richard is preceded in death by his son, Richard Gary Brickhouse; daughter, Jennifer McDowell; and his brother, Thomas Brickhouse
Richard is survived by his wife, Sara Lopez; children, Angela Campbell, Cara Salter (Jason), and Richard F. Brickhouse Jr.; stepchildren, Patricia Vazquez, Sarah Vazquez, and Paul Vazquez; grandchildren, Sarah Salter, Savannah Garner (Donald), and Kristi Byers (Scott); three great grandchildren; and many additional family members and friends.
Richard had a true spirit of adventure and embraced life with enthusiasm. Richard stated, “I stayed in trouble with the highway patrol losing my first license three weeks after receiving it. I was racing on Highway 421 with friends.” In 1969, Richard made history by winning the first NASCAR race held at Talladega, Alabama, a memory he cherished throughout his life. Strong-willed and passionate in all he did, Richard carefully considered every decision and lived with purpose and intention. He served in the US Army and considered his service a great honor. Richard deeply loved his family and found great joy in the relationships that meant the most to him. His life was one of zeal, determination, and love, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 28, 2026 at Kelley Cemetery near 473 Longview Road, Kelly with Pastor Jason Salter officiating. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service.
