Former president of the Supreme Federal Court ( STF ) Luiz Octavio Pires e Albuquerque Gallotti, known as Octavio Gallotti, died this Sunday (26), at the age of 95, in Brasília .

The Brazilian Supreme Court (STF) lamented the death of the retired minister, highlighted his work on the Court between 1984 and 2000, and emphasized his legacy of independence, technical rigor, and defense of the Constitution.

The court informed in a note that the wake, open to the public, will be held this Monday (27), in the White Room of the STF, in Brasília, from 10 am to 4 pm. The burial will take place on Tuesday (28), in Rio de Janeiro.

In a statement (see full text below), the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office (MPF) lamented the death of former minister Octávio Gallotti and highlighted his career marked by the defense of democracy, commitment to the Constitution, and contribution to the strengthening of Brazilian institutions.

Gallotti built one of the longest careers in the Brazilian Judiciary. He was a member of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) between 1984 and 2000, having been appointed by then-President João Figueiredo.

During his time at the Court, he held the positions of vice-president and president of the Supreme Court, leading the court between 1993 and 1995.

Born in Rio de Janeiro on October 27, 1930, Gallotti graduated in Law from the then University of Brazil, now the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

Before joining the Supreme Court, he served as a prosecutor for the Public Prosecutor's Office at the Court of Auditors and was a minister of the Federal Court of Auditors (TCU), where he also held the presidency of the institution.

Octavio Gallotti retired from the Supreme Court in October 2000, upon reaching the age limit for remaining on the Court.

The Supreme Federal Court (STF), the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), and other judicial institutions have not yet officially commented on the death of the former minister.

A native of Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Gallotti was a member of the Supreme Federal Court from 1984 to 2000, a period in which he participated in consolidating the Court's jurisprudence after the promulgation of the 1988 Federal Constitution. He presided over the STF between 1993 and 1995 and the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) between 1994 and 1996, exercising his functions with a recognized commitment to the Constitution, the Democratic Rule of Law, and the strengthening of republican institutions.
