Cal Boyington Dies: Talent Agent, Reality Producer & Vital Artists Agency Co-Founder Was 53

He was not on the list.

Cal Boyington, a veteran TV talent and packaging agent at ICM Partners and Paradigm who co-founded Vital Artists Agency and also worked on The Osbournes and executive-produced TV series including Workaholics, died November 18 in Los Angeles. He was 53.

His brother B.G. Dickey confirmed the news to Deadline but said a cause of death was pending.

Born Michael Carlton Boyington on March 3, 1971, in Kansas City, MO, he spent his formative years in Vail, CO, before moving to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. Boyington was an unscripted agent at ICM Partners, worked at Mandolin Entertainment and served as Head of Alternative Programming at Paradigm Talent Agency and VP Digital/TV at Rebel Entertainment Partners.

He co-launched Vital Artists Agency in late 2020 with Rebel Entertainment senior unscripted agents Phil Irven and April Yuan after the retirement of their former boss Richard Lawrence. The founding partners went their separate ways last year, with Boyington taking sole ownership of the company name, trademark and logo. “The split was amicable and that all parties herein remain solely focused on their clients and the bright future ahead,” the company said in an April 2023 statement to Deadline.

Vital Artists Agency’s clients included Valerie Chow, Moira Noriega and Vivian Payton along with production companies Sunwise Media, Empty Quarter Studios and Dola Media.

Along with Comedy Central’s Workaholics, Boyington’s executive producer credits include the Hulu docudrama R5Sons Alaska, Discovery Channel’s Bible Quest, VH1’s Cabo and HDNet’s The Baker Boys. He also helped packed MTV’s Emmy-winning 2002-05 reality series The Osbournes

His family said Boyington was known for his boundless energy, magnetic personality, joie de vivre and being the life of every party.

Along with his brother, Boyington is survived by his parents Mike Boyington and Travis “Penny” Farrar.
