George Lehmann obit

Basketball Star George Lehmann Has Died

He was not on the list.

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of George A. Lehmann, 83, of Cinnaminson, NJ (and long-time resident of Riverside) - a devoted husband, father, and friend whose loyalty, warmth and zest for life will be sorely missed. Known for his remarkable passion, relentless determination, and charismatic personality, George leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter and a life richly lived. He touched countless lives, leaving an indelible mark on everyone he encountered.

Born in 1941, in Riverside, NJ, to Mary (nee Jordan) and George Lehmann, George’s talent for basketball became quickly apparent. After high school at Camden Catholic, he attended Campbell College, where his skill and sharp shooting were unmatched. His remarkable determination and talent led him to the ABA and NBA, where he set ABA records that endure to this day.

Lehmann was the first professional basketball player to make more than 40% of his three-point attempts in a season, which he did in 1970–71.

When his days as a professional player concluded, George found a new calling: teaching basketball fundamentals and shooting skills to young athletes. For over two decades, he travelled across the Unites States, running camps and clinics and instilling a love for the game and life skills, including the “Secret of Success”, to thousands of coaches and young players. His impact on the lives of those he reached remains a significant part of his legacy.

In addition to his contributions to the game, George was a pioneering entrepreneur in the specialty sports apparel industry. His creative and innovative spirit helped shape the modern  “team” athletic apparel market as it is known today.

While basketball and business were defining parts of George’s life, his greatest pride was his family. He was a devoted husband to the love of his life, Joy. Their bond was a testament to their enduring love, built over 51 years of shared dreams and unwavering support. As a father, the bond he shared with his three children was rooted in unconditional love, where each one knew just how deeply they were loved and cherished. To his children, he was loved and treasured beyond words and beyond measure.

Nothing brought him more happiness than sharing and reliving memories with his loved ones and close friends. George’s stories and special ability to recapture the past, often filled with humor and life’s lessons, turned everyday moments into precious memories. His boundless generosities to those he knew and to those he did not know touched countless lives, leaving a legacy of kindness and compassion that will be remembered by all who crossed his path. Perhaps most of all, George cherished the simple joy of playing pickup basketball with his brothers, children and friends at St. Peter’s church gym in Riverside, NJ.

In 1996, George recaptured his love for golf and spent countless hours honing his game. He loved playing competitive matches, savoring the camaraderie shared with his son, Todd, as well as family and friends at Willow Brook Country Club, Burlington Country Club and Golden Pheasant Country Club, his favorite places to play. George’s family and friends will forever treasure these memories, carrying forward his example and the wisdom he imparted.

George was predeceased by his beloved wife of 51 years, Phillis Joyce Lehmann (nee DeSanctis); his parents, Mary and George Lehmann, his brothers, Joseph and John Lehmann, and his grandson, Anthony Lehmann. He is also predeceased by his dear in-laws, Elizabeth and Frederick DeSanctis.  He is survived by his loving children, Frederick Sean Lehmann, Todd Lehmann, Nicole L. Tharrington; and by his grandchildren, Alexis and J.C.; and great-granddaughter, Gemma. Also surviving are his siblings, Paul Lehmann, Mary Vogel, Austin, James, Vincent, Benedict and Thomas Lehmann, along with many nieces, nephews and their families.

Family and friends are invited to attend his viewing on Friday, November 15, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM at the Weber Funeral Home, 112 Broad Street, Riverton, NJ 08077 followed by his Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM at Sacred Heart Church, 4th Street & Linden Avenue, Riverton, NJ 08077.
