T. J. Simers obit

Former 'Around The Horn' Panelist Has Died At 73

He was not on the list.

A longtime sports columnist who appeared on ESPN's "Around The Horn" passed away on Sunday.

He was 73 years old.

TJ Simers, a longtime sports columnist for the Los Angeles Times, passed away. He had reportedly been battling a brain tumor.

Lance Pugmire, a Boxing Scene reporter, shared the tough news.

“Just informed by my longtime @latimes Sports Editor Bill Dwyre that our legendary columnist T.J. Simers has just died,” he wrote. “RIP, T.J., thank you for all you did to lift me up and love and prayers to your beautiful family, my dear friend!”

Simers, a longtime columnist for the Los Angeles sports scene, also appeared on the early episodes of ESPN's "Around The Horn."

He was part of the first show, which was hosted by Max Kellerman before Tony Reali took over. ESPN later dropped him from the show when he said he was "embarrassed" to be part of it.

Simers was let go by the Los Angeles Times in 2013, though he ended up suing and won a $15.4 million settlement.

He worked for the Los Angeles Times from 1990 to 2013 before accepting a position at the Orange County Register where he worked until accepting a voluntary buyout. He attended Northern Illinois University.

Simers also worked at The San Diego Union, the Rocky Mountain News, The Commercial Appeal, the Morristown Daily Record, the Beloit Daily News, the Coeur d'Alene Press, and the DeKalb Chronicle.

He was named 2000 California Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

Our thoughts are with T.J.'s friends and family members following his death.

May he rest in peace.
