John McAllister Dies: Inmate Called “Eastside” On Netflix Docuseries ‘Unlocked’ Found Unresponsive In Cell At 29

John McAllister, an inmate at the Williams Correctional Facility in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, who was featured on Netflix‘s recent hit docuseries Unlocked: A Jail Experiment, died Sunday, June 2, after being found unresponsive in his bunk. He was 29.
He was pronounced dead after being transported by ambulance to the Jefferson Regional Medial Center. Police do not suspect foul play or suicide.
McAllister, who went by the nickname “Eastside” on the prison docuseries, had been serving a three-year sentence after being convicted of ten felony counts related to drugs, breaking and entering, theft of property, and firearms possession.
Unlocked: A Jail Experiment, which debuted to very strong ratings on Netflix in April, chronicled the lives of 46 inmates of the Pulaski County Regional Detention Facility who agreed to participate in a six-week experiment proposed by local sheriff Eric Higgins: In an attempt to foster responsibility among the inmates, the experiment participants lived at the prison with reduced oversight and control. Although guards were always on watch, the inmates were free to leave their unlocked cells and make choices for how to spend their days within the facility.
According to a GoFundMe page set up by his family, McAllister had only 30 days to go before being release. “His sudden passing has left our family devastated,” his aunt writes on the page, adding that the cause of death is under investigation.
