Ray Johnson, actor, poet, Hilo icon, dies at 89

Raymond Samuel Johnson, 89, of Hilo died August 15 at Life Care Center. Born November 15, 1931, In New York City, he was an actor and a poet. In the first Dirty Harry movie, he appears in a memorable scene working over the Scorpio Killer character. He also plays the antagonist to Sun Ra in the jazz cult classic, Space is the Place. In addition to his visual arts performances, his poem, Walking on 125th Street, is included in Black Fire, a pivotal literary collection of The Black Arts Movement of the 1960’s. Memorial gathering to be held later.
