French Tickner(1930-2021)
He was not on the list.
French Alexis Tickner
Aug. 26, 1930 - Aug. 26, 2021
"A man of the theater" is how French wants to be remembered
Born in Olney, Illinois to Lex Tickner and Charlene Tickner
nee French (for those who have always wondered how he got his name there you
go!). French started singing and acting early in hjs life.He attended Millikin
University in Decatur where he obtained his bachelor of music. His future bride
Mary Colleen Jewell was also at the same university. The Korean war interrupted
his graduate studies. Proud of his years in the US Navy, he flew with the AV-35
squadron Nighthawks from the USS Essex. After the war he continued his studies
at USC.At the urging of his mentor Walter Ducloux, he moved his focus from
singing to directing, where he excelled as well. In 1963 he was invited to
Vancouver BC by Dr Welton Marquis, to help establish the UBC School of Music
where he headed Opera/Voice for over 25 years. His career in film, television
and voiceover work scanned decades. He was Santa Claus, Chef Boy-are-Dee, the
judge, the dirty old man, and too many other rapscallions to list.
In 2019 he proudly became a Canadian citizen.
During Covid-19 he kept up his many interests. He baked,
pickled, grew mushrooms and planted veggies in the driveway.
Tickner parties, especially Christmas, were epic productions, with him as director and Mary and Adele as his crew. 2020 was the first year since 1964 that the Christmas party wasn't produced. A powerful singer, charismatic actor, lecturer, director and brilliant teacher. French is predeceased by his wife Mary, his brother Michael. He leaves behind his best friend of over 30years Adele Clark. Thanks to Dr Steven Sutcliffe and all the medical staff for their assistance over the years. No service by request.
