Hells Angels motorcycle club leader Sonny Barger dies at age 83

Barger founded the Oakland chapter in 1957 and became the group’s US president, bringing them to international notoriety

Sonny Barger, a leader of the Hells Angels who was key to bringing the outlaw motorcycle club to international notoriety, died on Wednesday from cancer. Barger was 83. He was born in Modesto, California.

“If you are reading this message, you’ll know that I’m gone. I’ve asked that this note be posted immediately after my passing,” a post on Barger’s official Facebook page said. “I’ve lived a long and good life filled with adventure. And I’ve had the privilege to be part of an amazing club.

“Although I’ve had a public persona for decades, i’ve [sic] mostly enjoyed special time with my club brothers, my family, and close friends. Please know that I passed peacefully after a brief battle with cancer,” Barger also said. “But also know that in the end, I was surrounded by what really matters: My wife, Zorana, as well as my loved ones. Keep your head up high, stay loyal, remain free, and always value honor.”

Fritz Clapp, Barger’s former attorney, said that he died at home. Barger was previously diagnosed with stage four liver cancer, Clapp said.

“He’d lived a long life, and he’d been ill for some time,” Clapp said on Thursday. “Everybody around him had pretty much been prepared emotionally for it.”

Barger founded the Oakland, California, Hells Angels chapter in 1957, almost one decade after the club’s first chapter began in Fontana, California. Barger became the organization’s national president shortly thereafter, as the Fontana chapter founder, Otto Freddi, was imprisoned, according to the New York Times.

When Barger helmed the Hells Angels, he got into scrapes, took drugs, and raced his Harley-Davidson, Sweet Cocaine, along California’s expansive freeways. His rap sheet included arrests for drunk driving, assaults with deadly weapons, kidnapping, drug-dealing and racketeering, and he wound up spending time behind bars for drug counts.

Over the following decades, the Hells Angels became known as a violent outlaw gang with outposts spanning the globe. Barger’s tenure at the helm of the Hells Angels ended when he went to prison, according to a prior report in the Guardian.

But in an autobiography published some two decades ago, Barger said the Hells Angels were not a collection of cutthroat, anti-social bikers. Rather, Barger claimed, Hells Angels mostly behaved themselves, enjoying their out-of-date motorcycles and hard-partying.

Barger wrote that the Hells Angels had evolved dramatically since their inception. In the 1950s, they came together to ride motorcycles and party. In the 1960s, they were thrust into fame as emblematic of counter-culture rebellion, Barger said.

The next decade, Hells Angels evolved into a gang organization, spurring widespread condemnation. In the 1980s and 1990s, Barger said, Hells Angels were punished for the crimes they did and “and some we didn’t”.

“His loyalty to the club was unwavering for half a century,” Clapp also said.

Barger also appeared as an actor, including in the biker series Sons of Anarchy and film Angels from Hell. The latter depicted “a destructive ex-motorcycle gang leader [returning] home from Vietnam to resume his life. His desire to form a powerful gang has the police running scared,” according to imdb.com.

Former NBA Coach of the Year Mike Schuler Dies at 81

Michael “Coach” Harold Schuler born on September 22, 1940, to parents Dorothy and Boyd Schuler of Portsmouth, Ohio, left us on June 28th, 2022. He passed peacefully to reunite with his beloved wife of 57 years, Gloria “Sweet G” Sissea Schuler, who preceded him in death in 2016. Married on July 20th, 1963, they intimately constructed a life built around their baby daughters, numerous relocations, new faces, new places, wins, losses, and a calendar that rotated around planet Basketball. Early on, Coach recognized that he was not a ‘naturally gifted athlete.’ He stood 6ft tall and weighed a buck-sixty soaking wet. Through relentless effort, however, Coach earned a D1 scholarship to Ohio University in 1959. As a guard, he was on two MAC Championship teams and played in two NCAA tournaments. It was during these years that a blue eyed beauty batted her lashes, cheering him from the sidelines. His heart melted instantly! Upon graduation in 1962, he understood that his talents did not belong on the court. His future was in coaching, and coach he did, working alongside some of the greats: Jim Snyder, Bobby Knight, Terry Holland, Larry Brown and Don Nelson. Coach had the privilege to mentor some outstanding young men into elite collegiate players and consummate professionals: Mike Krzyzewski, Barry Parkhill, Wally Walker, Ricky Pierce, and Kenny Austin. He coached pro superstars like Darryl Dawkins, Terry Cummings, Clyde Drexler, Terry Porter, Kiki VanDeWeghe, Kevin Garnett, and Sidney Moncrief to highlight just a few. In 1987, while at the helm of the Portland Trailblazers, Coach graciously accepted the Red Auerbach Trophy, designating him “Coach of the Year.” He is one of only five active or retired coaches to win this recognition for their inaugural season. This and his 2014 induction into the Ohio Athletics Hall of Fame as the recipient of the Glenn C. Randall Lifetime Achievement Award, were two of his proudest career achievements. Coach was regimented, direct, punctual, and demanding of himself and of others best efforts. He was also charismatic, stylish, fun to be around, and a huge Elvis fan. During the off seasons, and eventual retirement, Coach enjoyed family vacations, friends, golf, tennis, going to movies and spending his Sunday mornings watching Billy Graham. Coach, better known as “Poppop” to his family, enjoyed nothing more than watching his grandchildren do their things. He is survived by his daughter Kimberly S. Foxx, husband Bryan Foxx, their children, Weston Michael Foxx and Madison Morgan Foxx from Elkhorn, Nebraska. Also, daughter Kristin Schuler Baker, husband Rick Baker, their children Jaxson Schuler Baker, and Jordan Brooke Baker from Phoenix, Arizona. A private family service will be held to inter Coach and Sweet G’s ashes together. A celebration of life reception will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made on behalf of Mike Schuler to the Jim Snyder Coaching Endowment

Marlin Briscoe, first Black starting quarterback in AFL, dies at 76

Marlin Briscoe, who became the first Black starting quarterback in the American Football League more than 50 years ago, died Monday.

His daughter, Angela Marriott, told The Associated Press that Briscoe, 76, died of pneumonia at a hospital in Norwalk, California. He had been hospitalized with circulation issues in his legs.

Briscoe, an Omaha, Nebraska, native, was a star quarterback at Omaha University before the Denver Broncos drafted him as a cornerback in the 14th round in 1968. Briscoe told the team he'd return home to become a teacher if he couldn't get a tryout at quarterback. Denver agreed to an audition, and the 5-foot-10 dynamo nicknamed "The Magician" made the starting lineup on October 6.

Briscoe started five games that season. He was runner-up for AFL rookie of the year after passing for 1,589 yards and 14 touchdowns and rushing for 308 yards and three scores.

Denver didn't give him a chance to compete for the quarterback job in 1969, so he asked to be released. He became a Pro Bowl receiver with the Buffalo Bills and won two Super Bowls with the Miami Dolphins. He was a receiver on the 1972 Dolphins team that finished with a perfect season.

Briscoe was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2016.

Briscoe was 5-foot-10 and 177 pounds when the AFL's Broncos took him in the 14th round of the 1968 draft at the age of 22. The Broncos intended to convert Briscoe to cornerback, but Briscoe had negotiated for a chance to compete for the quarterback position.

On September 29, 1968, starter Steve Tensi suffered a broken collarbone, and backup Joe DiVito was spotty. Head coach Lou Saban summoned Briscoe from the sidelines in the fourth quarter against the Boston Patriots to give him a try. Briscoe's first play was a 22-yard completion. On his second series he orchestrated an 80-yard touchdown drive. He completed a 21-yard pass and ran for 38 more himself, carrying it the last 12 yards for the score.

A week later, on October 6, he became the first starting African-American quarterback in the AFL. Briscoe threw 14 touchdown passes that year in just 5 starts, including 4 on Nov 24 against Buffalo; both are still Broncos rookie records. He also threw for 335 yards in that game, a rookie record that stood until John Elway broke it in 1983, and one of only three 300+ yard rookie games in franchise history. He completed 41.5 percent of his passes, and averaged 7.1 yards per attempt and his 17.1 yards per completion led the American Football League (and ranks 18th all-time). He also ran for 308 yards and three touchdowns

Before the 1969 season started, Briscoe, still determined to play quarterback, discovered that head coach Saban intended to use Pete Liske as the starter, so he asked to be released. He went to the AFL's Buffalo Bills where he was turned into a receiver, since the Bills already had superstar Jack Kemp, former Pro Bowler Tom Flores, and James Harris, another black quarterback with a more prototypical 6-foot-4 and 210-pound frame. Briscoe never played quarterback again, but he enjoyed a splendid career. He led Buffalo in touchdown catches in each of his three seasons there and in receptions twice. In 1970 he was in the top two in receptions and receiving yards and became an All-Pro.

After the AFL-NFL merger, he played in the National Football League from 1970 though 1976, mostly with American Football Conference teams. In 1971, the Bills traded Briscoe to the Miami Dolphins for the first-round draft pick used to take Joe Delamielleure, who developed as a Hall of Fame guard.

Briscoe went on to win a pair of Super Bowls. Briscoe led the undefeated 1972 team with four touchdown receptions and was the leading receiver on the Dolphins in 1973, catching more passes than future Pro Football Hall of Famer, Paul Warfield.

Briscoe made stops with the San Diego Chargers, and Detroit Lions before ending his career in 1976 with the New England Patriots. He had 10 receptions for 136 yards and 1 touchdown in 14 regular season games for the New England Patriots in 1976. He caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Steve Grogan in the Patriots 48–17 rout of the Oakland Raiders at Schaefer Stadium on October 3, 1976. Early in his career, Briscoe was intercepted by Boston Patriots AFL All Star Defensive Back Leroy Mitchell in Denver's 35–14 rout of the Patriots at Fenway Park on November 3, 1968. He is the only player to have been intercepted by a Patriot player and later to have caught a touchdown as a Patriot receiver.

A biopic film titled The Magician, based on Briscoe's life, has been under development for several years. Canadian actor Lyriq Bent has been approached to portray Briscoe in the film. In 2016, the University of Nebraska Omaha, Briscoe's alma mater, honored him by unveiling a statue.

Joe Turkel Dies: Actor Who Played Lloyd The Bartender In ‘The Shining’ Was 94

Joe Turkel, a prolific character actor whose indelible performances included roles as the sinister bartender Lloyd in The Shining and the maker of artificial humans in Blade Runner, died Monday, June 27, at St. John’s Hospital. He was 94.

His death was announced by his family, who said he died peacefully with his sons Craig and Robert by his side.

Turkel was born July 15, 1927 in Brooklyn, and at age 17 enlisted in the Merchant Marines and then joined the United States Army and saw active wartime service in Europe. He moved to California in 1947 to pursue an acting career, and the following year landed his first credited film work in City Across the River (1948).

Perhaps best remembered for his work in two major 1980s films – Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980) in which he played the ghostly barkeep serving drinks to a deranged Jack Nicholson, and Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner (1982), in which he played Dr. Eldon Tyrell, maker of artificial humans  – Turkel had earlier appeared in Kubrick’s first major features The Killing (1956) and Paths of Glory (1957) costarring with Kirk Douglas.

Turkel was one of just two actors to work in three Stanley Kubrick features as a credited character. He also had roles in three of Bert I. Gordon's films.

His skills were on full display in The Shining as he engages in a conversation full of portent and menace with Nicholson’s haunted, disturbed Jack Torrance. “Women,” Lloyd says after Torrance rants about wife Wendy. “Can’t live with them, can’t live without them.”

“Words of wisdom, Lloyd my man,” Torrance responds, as if just given his marching orders. “Words of wisdom.”

Later, when Torrance questions who has paid for his on-the-house drinks, Lloyd calmly replies, “It’s not a matter that concerns you, Mr Torrance. At least…not at this point.”

Turkel also had roles in Bert I. Gordon’s films, The Boy and the Pirates and Tormented (both 1960). That same year, he appeared as Dino in the POW drama King Rat (1960), and later took on the roles of Bronson in The Sand Pebbles (1966) costarring with Steve McQueen, gangster Jake ‘Greasy Thumb’ Gusic in The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre (1967) and the 1990 horror feature The Dark Side of the Moon.

In 1956 Turkel appeared in the television series The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp. Subsequent TV work, spanning decades, included episodes in Sky King, Frontier Doctor, Bat Masterson, The Asphalt Jungle, Mackenzie’s Raiders, Kojak, Tales from the Darkside, The Lone Ranger, S.W.A.T, Adam-12, Ironside, The Andy Griffith Show, Ben Casey, The Untouchables, Dragnet, and Miami Vice. Turkel played in three episodes of the hit western series Bonanza.

Just before his death, Turkel completed a memoir entitled The Misery of Success. The family plans to publish the book some time late 2022.

Turkel is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law Craig and Annie Turkel, and Robert and Casilde Sesti, and his brother David Turkel; two grandchildren, Ben and Sarah. He is preceded in death by his former wife, close friend and mother of his children, Anita J. Turkel and his brother, Harold.
