John F. O’Donohue, 79 years old, sadly passed away Tuesday, January 6th, 2026 at the Vero Beach Hospice House.

John was a native New Yorker and moved to Sebastian Florida in 2018.

John was a US Navy veteran and succumbed to illnesses contracted while in service of his country.

John was a retired New York City Police Lieutenant and served twenty with distinction. After retiring from NYPD, John had a successful acting career, appearing in many shows in the 1990s. He was a regular cast member on NYPD Blue when he retired from acting.

A native New Yorker, John F. O’Donohue was U.S. Navy veteran who went on to serve as a police officer with the NYPD for 20 years, retiring in 1988 with the rank of lieutenant. He subsequently joined the Screen Actor’s Guild and worked as a supporting actor from 1991. O’Donohue was natural casting for characters involving the law, including bailiffs, prison guards and police detectives. His best known recurring role was as squad commander Eddie Gibson in NYPD Blue (1993). He also showed up as regular support in The John Larroquette Show (1993) and (as diverse characters) in The Ben Stiller Show (1992) sketch comedy. Guest appearances included The West Wing (1999), CSI: Miami (2002) and Law & Order (1990). O’Donohue moved to ‘the Hibiscus City’ Vero Beach, Florida, in 2018. He died there on January 6 2026, aged 79.

John is survived by his wife Agnes, who he has been married to for 57 years. He is also survived by his loving son, Sean and daughter-in-law Nuala whom he loved. John is predeceased by his son Kevin O’Donohue, whom passed in 1991.

Many people’s lives were affected in a positive way from knowing John and he will be sadly missed by many friends and relatives.

Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 20th, 2026, at Saint Sebastian’s Catholic Church, 13075 US Hwy 1 Sebastian, Florida 32958.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105.
