Harry Sabin obit

Animator Harry Sabin Has Died

He was not on the list.

Harry Sabin was born on July 15, 1956 in the USA. He was an actor, animator and clean-up artist known for The Iron Giant (1999), Osmosis Jones (2001) and Space Jam (1996).

An alumnus of California Institute of the Arts, his work as a story artist, character designer and animator has appeared in many Warner Bros. animated productions, including theatrical shorts, “Box Office Bunny,” “Carrotblanca” and “Little Go Beep," commercials for McDonald’s and Nike, and feature films “Space Jam,” "Osmosis Jones” and “The Iron Giant.”

During his Warner Bros. tenure, he co-created with Alan Bodner the popular “Portrait Series” and “Arts and Leisure” limited editions for the Warner Bros. Studio Stores, featuring the Looney Tunes characters. His appealing drawings convey the spirit of Looney Tunes, giving the sense that behind the alluring pose is an anvil waiting to be dropped.

Lately he has lent his talents as a storyboard artist in the field of TV animation on “The Baby Looney Tunes Show” and “The Life and Times of Juniper Lee.” Most recently he has enjoyed a 7 season stint on the “American Dad!” TV series.

Fellow animator Mike Peraza wrote on his Facebook page - Very sorry to share the passing of a truly talented artist, gifted photographer and friend, Harry Sabin. He was an alummis of California Institute of the Arts as are many of my peers from the "old days". Harry’s expressive work was featured in animated projects such as the Disney animated feature, "The Fox and the Hound,” the animation feature “Raggedy Ann and Andy” for Lester Osterman Productions along with many Filmation animated productions.

His delightfully charming and appealing character designs often shared the spirit of classic Looney Tunes...the sense that above the cute pose... was an anvil just waiting to be dropped!

In fact his brilliant portrait series of those wonderful Warner Brothers characters formed a collection that is revered and sought after today. Harry was one of the first students of the original Cal Arts Disney Character Animation program to introduce himself to me and he became a lifelong friend. He was one of the easiest people to get along with which is one reason he has so many friends today, albeit sad ones with his untimely passing. Our hearts go out to Beth as we keep her in our thoughts and prayers
