Carl Crane Obituary
He was not on the list.
Former Louisiana State Representative Carl Crane passed away Sunday, April 14, 2024, at 11:56 p.m. He was 84 years old, a native of Ponchatoula, LA, and a resident of Baton Rouge. A former Assistant Professor at LSU for 12 years, he served on the East Baton Rouge City-Parish Council from 1977 to 1982, when he was elected to the Louisiana State House of Representatives, a position he held until 2007. During his tenure, he served on the House Appropriations Committee, the Joint Legislative Budget Committee, and the Governor's Workforce Development Taskforce, culminating in the Vice-Chairmanship and, later on, the Chairmanship of the House Education Committee, a position he held from 2000 to 2007. A strong force in the advancement of education reform and accountability in Louisiana, he was co-author of the TOPS College Scholarship Program, and was a member of the Governor's Blue Ribbon Commission on Education Excellence & Teacher Quality; the School & District Accountability Advisory Commission; the Taskforce on School Safety & Discipline; and was appointed by former Governor Mike Foster to the Southern Regional Education Board. In addition, he was recognized by the Louisiana Association of Computer Using Educators for his contribution to classroom technology; and received both the "Golden Apple" Award from the Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher Organization and Economic Development Award for promotion of economic development through his contribution in the field of education. An avid fan of SEC football and baseball, he also enjoyed yard work, walking and jogging, reading, talking politics, and spending time with his family. He is survived by his two children, Leslie and Shawn Crane; daughter-in-law Sandee Watt Crane; and three grandchildren, Jackson, Dylan, and Shelby Crane. Preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Nancy Burns Crane, with whom he is now joyfully reunited. A special thank-you to both the ER and ICU staffs at Baton Rouge General for the wonderful care he received (thank you Dr. Durham, Terraye, and Sarraphine!), plus a grateful shout-out to the Baton Rouge Fire Department and EMS for their quick response. In lieu of a funeral service, a private gathering for immediate family members and close friends will be announced at a later date. Condolences, memories, and sympathies may be shared at www.dignitymemorial.com. A man of tremendous personal integrity and character, determined in his dedication to the public good and devotion to his family, he will be greatly missed...we will always love you.
