James Falkinburg Obituary
He was not on the list.
James Nelson was born on September 25, 1932 in California, USA. He was a producer, known for The China Syndrome (1979), Big Trouble in Little China (1986) and Ghostbusters (1984). He was married to Barbara. He died on June 18, 2014 in California, USA.
James M. Falkinburg, well-known in the entertainment industry as Jim Nelson, passed away on June 18, 2014. Following the "family business," a long legacy which included grandparents who were stage actors; his father, Sam Nelson, who was a silent movie actor and later a director; and many other family members, Jim began working in the movie industry at age 17. From 1954 he was a sound effects editor and in 1965 he co-founded Edit-Rite, the premier post-production facility of its time. In 1972 he formed James Nelson Enterprises, Inc. and expanded into production of feature films. From 1975 through 1977 he functioned as the uncredited Associate Producer of STAR WARS, during which time he was responsible for the administration and management of the newly-created Industrial Light and Magic (ILM). In 1978 he became the Associate Producer and Unit Production Manager on THE CHINA SYNDROME. He produced BORDERLINE in 1980. In 1984, he helped Richard Edlund found Boss Films and functioned as Vice-President and consultant for four years. In 1991 he produced SOLAR CRISIS with Edlund and executive produced THE SEVENTH COIN. IN 1994 he semi-retired, still functioning as advisor and mentor to many. In his retirement, he loved traveling, cooking, entertaining and helping the many who sought his advice and aid in the movie business. Over his long career he worked on 21 films in a production capacity; and over 1700 TV episodes, 38 TV series and many TV movies, documentaries and specials as a sound effects editor and post-production supervisor. He was an active member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences since 1964, the Directors Guild (1957), Motion Picture Sound Editors (1955) and Motion Picture Editors Guild (1952). Jim was known for his quick wit, his honesty, his kindness and loyalty. He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Barbara; his two daughters, Kimberley Ybiernas and Leslie Hewitt; two grandchildren, James Ybiernas and Nicole Rivera; a great-grandson, Jaden Ybiernas; his brother, director Gary Nelson; many nephews and nieces (biological and those who called him "Uncle Jimmy") and a multitude of friends. As was his wish, there are no services. Burial is at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills. Donations may be made to the Motion Picture & Television Foundation, P.O. Box 51150, Los Angeles, CA 90051-9706.
