Shoals musician, songwriter Scott Boyer dies
He was not on the list.
Shoals area musician and songwriter Scott Boyer died Tuesday. Boyer was a founding member of the bands Cowboy and the Decoys.
Grammy Award-winning artist Jason Isbell confirmed Boyer's death on Twitter Tuesday night.
"Scott Boyer was the first real songwriter that ever took me seriously. I was living on his couch when I met Patterson Hood. Scott wrote beautiful songs, and he was a damn good singer. We'll all miss him a lot," he said.
David Hood of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section told the TimesDaily Boyer was in poor health.
"It's such a shock to everybody though we knew he was in poor health," Hood said, who was also a member of The Decoys. "He was such a talented writer."]
Boyer's 70th birthday was celebrated at Champy's Chicken in Muscle Shoals on Oct. 17, 2017.
In 2013, Garage Cafe in Birmingham hosted a benefit concert to help pay for Boyer's medical bills related to treatments for peripheral artery disease. He was reportedly diagnosed with the disease around 2007.
Cowboy was the backing band for the Gregg Allman Live Tour album, which was released in 1974.
Boyer founded Cowboy with Tommy Talton in the 1960s. The band was later signed to Capricorn Records in Macon, Georgia. The band's second album was recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios.
Gregg Allman covered Cowboy's "All My Friends" on his 1973 solo bow "Laid Back." Eric Clapton covered "Please Be With Me" on his 1974 LP "461 Ocean Boulevard."
"5'll Getcha Ten," which appeared on the second Cowboy Album was later recorded by Eric Clapton.
