Maureen S. Gray was an accomplished singer and songwriter.
Gray died on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014 of a rare cancer of the bile duct. She was 65.
She was born May 10, 1948 in New York City.
She made her first public appearance in Carnegie Hall, New York at the age of five. She sang “Steam Heat” from the musical “Pajama Game,” and received a standing ovation from the audience. She attended ballet school and enjoyed performing in plays and singing in different venues in New York. At the age of 12, she performed in a concert with her mother at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Glassboro, N.J.
Gray attended public schools in Philadelphia. She was discovered by songwriter/record producer John Madera. She went on to record regional hits such as “Today’s The Day,” “Crazy Over You,” “I Don’t Want To Cry” and “Dancing The Strand,” written by Madera and partner, Dave White.
Gray went on to write her own songs and play the piano, guitar and the keyboard. She was well-known in England where she once resided. She would often travel to California, France, The Netherlands, Spain and Italy.
She is survived by her mother Louise; daughter Nikko; uncles Joseph and Norman Abraham and other relatives and friends.
Services were held on Jan. 16 at Slater Funeral Home, 1426

She resided for many years in London, England, where she recorded and performed with David Bowie, George Harrison, John Lennon, Steve Winwood, Dave Mason, David Crosby, and Stephen Sills
