Cuban-born actor Luis Avalos, known for his work on the PBS kids show “The Electric Company,” died Wednesday following a recent heart attack. He was 67.
Avalos joined “Electric Company” during its second season and played multiple characters, most notably Doctor Doolots, making him one of the first Latino actors featured prominently in mainstream media. He remained a cast member on the series, acting alongside stars including Morgan Freeman, Rita Moreno and Bill Cosby, until the series ended in 1977.
Avalos then went on to appear in 21 episodes of the CBS hospital-based sitcom “E/R” as Dr. Thomas Esquivel and as Principal Rivas on ABC’s “Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper.” Some of his other TV credits include “Jack & Bobby,” “Full House,” “Resurrection Blvd.” and “NYPD Blue.”
Ávalos also starred as Jesse Rodriguez on the short-lived situation comedy Condo with McLean Stevenson.
The Havana native was also featured in several films, including “Jungle 2 Jungle” with Tim Allen and “The Ringer” with Johnny Knoxville. His final film project, “$5 a Day,” was released in 2008.
In addition to his acting career, Avalos founded the Americas Theatre Arts Foundation in Los Angeles in 2000 with the goal of supporting productions of Latin American-inspired dramas.
