Tim Curry Dies: ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ Actor Was 80

He was not on the list.

Tim Curry, who shot to stardom in his signature role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, the corset-wearing “sweet transvestite from Transsexual Transylvania” in the 1975 cult classic film The Rocky Horror Picture Show, died Tuesday at his home in L.A.’s Toluca Lake neighborhood. He was 80.

His death was confirmed by longtime manager and friend Marcia Hurwitz, who said the actor passed away peacefully but did not provide a cause of death. Curry, a three-time Tony Award nominee, had been in precarious health since suffering a major stroke in 2012. He had used a wheelchair since the stroke and the brain surgery that followed.

“Throughout his life, he refused to be boxed in or confined to others’ expectations,” the announcement reads. “Across five decades, he moved fluidly between comedy, horror, drama, and music, delighting himself and his legion of fans with his countless dynamic personas. … He is, depending on who you ask, the definitive Dr. Frank-N-Furter, the definitive Pennywise, the man who made a butler’s death-scene monologue in Clue an all-time comedic bit, or simply ‘that unforgettable voice’ from a beloved cartoon of someone’s childhood.

“Few actors can claim to have left as many distinct fingerprints on pop culture,” the statement continues, “and though he suffered a debilitating stroke in 2012, he continued adding to his achievements as an artist and, most recently, a writer. Though widely known for his inimitable, flamboyant characters and colorful stage performances, his greatest legacies to those who knew him were his curious, expansive mind and generous, gentle heart, both of which remained open and filled with anticipation until his final breath.”

In addition to Rocky Horror, Curry portrayed the evil, grinning clown Pennywise in ABC’s 1990 miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s It, as well as memorable roles in such films as Annie (1982), Clue (1985), Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), Addams Family Reunion (1998) and Scary Movie 2 (2001), among many others.

Born Timothy James Curry on April 19, 1946, in Grappenhall, Cheshire, England, Curry was educated at the Prior’s Court preparatory school and Kingswood School in Bath, appearing in student theatrical productions even before attending Birmingham University to study drama and English from 1965-68.

His first post-collegiate acting job was in the original London production of Hair in 1968. According to his official website, Curry landed the role after lying to producers about his professional experience and Equity membership. By the time they discovered the truth, they were so impressed with his talent that they offered to sponsor him for union membership.

“I wanted to do the ‘Sodomy, Fellatio…’ song but I ended up just jumping up and down at the back as part of the troupe,” he’d remember later. “It was a very peculiar production. People just didn’t turn up if they were a bit stoned or they thought they’d stay home. But I was a real trouper. I always showed up.”

Curry begged off his 18-month contract with the show to appear in a Royal Shakespeare Company production of After Haggarty in 1970. In addition to other stage performances from the era, he appeared on TV in The Policeman & The Cook (1972) with Michael Crawford.

The break of a lifetime arrived in 1973 when he was cast in a new musical written by a Hair castmate named Richard O’Brien. After auditioning with a rendition of Little Richard’s “Tutti Frutti,” he landed the central role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Show.

Produced at the Royal Court’s Theatre Upstairs, Rocky Horror became a sensation, moving to ever-larger venues and eventually to The Roxy on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. Record mogul Lou Adler produced the Los Angeles staging and the movie version that began filming in 1974. Perfectly coinciding with the glam rock craze spearheaded by David Bowie and T. Rex, the film would become a staple on the midnight movie circuit of the 1970s. It was the first and best-known of the cosplaying audience-participation experiences, with fans dressing as characters, shouting joke responses to dialogue and tossing rice during a wedding scene or bread when Frank-N-Furter called for “a toast” at dinner.

The film’s soundtrack album reached No. 55 on the Billboard 200 and No. 79 in the UK, where it peaked at No. 16 in a 50th anniversary 2025 rerelease last year. It songs “Time Warp” and Curry-sung “Sweet Transvestite” became enduring favorites on Dr. Demento’s long-running radio show.

But not even the film’s outre reputation could help the musical survive Broadway — at least during its initial 1975 run. Lambasted by New York critics, Rocky Horror closed after only 45 performances. (For the record, neither Bowie nor T. Rex’s Marc Bolan could repeat their initial UK success in the United States, which was decidedly unready for the glitter revolution; Bowie would outlast it, Bolan never did).

Over the following decades, the musical would go on to be produced in countless stagings around the world, most recently by Broadway’s Roundabout Theatre Company in the ongoing and hit staging directed by Sam Pinkleton and starring Luke Evans in the Frank-N-Furter role (soon to be succeeded by Jake Shears). The revival was nominated for nine Tony Awards this year, including for Evans’ performance as Frank-N-Furter.

Although he would admit to being devastated by the Broadway failure, Curry later would say: “I think that was really one of the most formative things that has ever happened to me. I just went home and took out a bottle of vodka for about a month, actually. I sent out for submarine sandwiches and drank and got hugely patched, and then started work again. And I think once you’ve had a really serious failure, nothing can ever be as bad as that again. So you might as well just go for it, because they can’t make you feel any worse than they did before.”

Following Rocky Horror, Curry appeared in Stephen Frears’ television production of Three Men in a Boat alongside Monty Python’s Michael Palin. He then was approached to play Dadaist Tristan Tzara in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Tom Stoppard’s Travesties, which ran in both the West End and on Broadway through 1976.

Also in ’76, Curry starred in the six-part UK television series The Life & Times of William Shakespeare, portraying the Bard from a young man through to his death. And while Rocky Horror was gaining traction on U.S. screens, Curry was cast in the film The Shout with Alan Bates and John Hurt.

Around the same time, Curry went to work on what would be an unreleased studio album with producer Adler in 1976 before moving to A&M Records for another three albums between 1978 and 1981. Bob Ezrin, who’d produced Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, Lou Reed, Kiss and many others, helmed the first of Curry’s A&M albums, 1978’s Read My Lips — which arrived months before his Rocky Horror Picture Show castmate Meat Loaf’s landmark Bat Out of Hell LP.

“He projected a kind of instant charisma — very serious, very powerful, very determined,” Ezrin would say of Curry. “He’s polished on the surface, but beneath it there is a raw sinister power. He’s got plenty of balls.”

After forging a friendship with Peter Shaffer, Curry would take the lead in the Broadway production of the playwright’s Amadeus. He played Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to Ian McKellen’s Salieri. The show was a hit and earned Tony nominations for both actors (McKellen won).

Subsequent movie roles followed, including the 1980 flop Times Square and the more successful 1982 film adaptation of the musical Annie.

While largely abandoning his modest career as a recording artist, Curry found greater success on the stage and screens, appearing in London in Joe Papp’s pop version of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance. On TV he starred as the evil Bill Sikes in Oliver Twist and on film in The Ploughman’s Lunch with Jonathan Pryce. He played the character Darkness in Ridley Scott’s 1985 Legend opposite Tom Cruise, and soon after made a memorable turn as the ill-fated butler Wadsworth in the starry Jonathan Lynn-John Landis movie Clue, alongside Lesley Ann Warren, Martin Mull, Madeline Kahn, Michael McKean, Christopher Lloyd and Eileen Brennan.

Continuing his London stage career throughout the ’80s, Curry also branched out to what would become a significant aspect of his career: voice roles for animation. Approached by Hanna-Barbera Productions to play the devilish Serpent in a 1988 installment of the direct-to-video series The Greatest Adventure: Stories from the Bible, Curry would go on to become one of the most prolific and best-known voiceover artists in the industry, with such roles as Nigel Thornberry in The Wild Thornberrys and his Daytime Emmy-winning Captain Hook in Peter Pan and the Pirates.

Other voice credits include his Grammy-nominated audiobook of Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, a Daytime Emmy-nominated turn in Mighty Max and an Annie Award-nominated role in Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas as well as video games such as Frankenstein: Through The Eyes of a Monster, Red Alert 3, Dragon Age: Origins and Brutal Legend.

“I find there is something very intimate about being the voice in someone’s ear when they’re driving,” Curry later would say. “I’ve received letters from people who’ve said, ‘You took me all the way to Tuscaloosa.’ It’s you, the author and your own imagination, and you’re trying to engage the listener’s imagination. It’s a creative, lovely thing to do.”

After moving to Los Angeles in 1988, Curry restored a 1920s mansion in the Los Feliz neighborhood, finding a new passion for home renovation and gardening at the same time his Hollywood career took serious flight. He played a seedy record exec in the 1989 series Wiseguy, had a supporting role in The Hunt for Red October starring Sean Connery and, in 1990, landed the character that, had it not been for Frank-N-Furter, likely would be his signature role and the headline for this obituary: Pennywise, the child-killing clown of King’s It.

With prosthetics that gave him a grin to rival Jack Nicholson’s in another King project, The Shining, Curry’s Pennywise would endure as one of the scariest King creations on film or television. The portrayal would forever send It to the top of lists for King’s best TV projects, rivaled only by the earlier Salem’s Lot. When Bill Skarsgård took on the role for an equally effective turn in the feature films It and It Chapter Two (2017 and 2019), the chilling results owed no small debt to Curry’s seminal interpretation.

Bouncing from film (Sylvester Stallone’s Oscar) to stage (Love Letters with Annie Potts) and voiceover (FernGully: The Last Rainforest), Curry soon would inhabit yet another role worthy of the signature description: In Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, he played the nosy, trouble-making Plaza Hotel concierge forever bedeviling little, lost Macaulay Culkin.

Back on Broadway in 1992, Curry appeared as the washed-up movie star drunkard in My Favorite Year, earning his second Tony Award nomination, and then it was back to film for yet another villain, this time in Walt Disney’s The Three Musketeers. On TV, he gave an Emmy-nominated performance as an entire family in the effective Tales from the Crypt episode “Death of Some Salesmen.”

Other 1990s credits veered from flop (Congo) to beloved (Muppet Treasure Island, in which he played the pirate Long John Silver). Other projects during the decade included Lover’s Knot, McHale’s Navy, cartoon Duckman and TV’s Titanic. He produced and co-starred in the 1997 Annie Potts sitcom Over the Top.

In 1998 he starred as Gomez (to Daryl Hannah’s Morticia) in Addams Family Reunion and two years later appeared as villain Roger Corwin in the big-screen adaptation of Charlie’s Angels.

Curry returned to the New York stage yet again in 2001, taking on the role of Ebenezer Scrooge in a musical production of A Christmas Carol at Madison Square Garden. Among his other stage credits over the years were the U.S. national tour of Me & My Girl (1987-89). In the UK, he starred in Danton’s Death (1971), Cinderella (1972), England’s Ireland (1972), playing Puck in Scottish Opera touring production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1972), Once Upon a Time (1972-73), and Give the Gaffers Time to Love You (1973) among others.

Credits in the 2000s also included Attila (2001), Scary Movie 2 (2001), Wolf Girl (2001), and The Scoundrel’s Wife (2002).

Also in 2002, he played the role of Mr. French in the updated (and failed) TV remake of ’60s sitcom Family Affair.

By this time, Curry had settled into a busy career as a guest star and supporting player in such TV shows as Monk and Will & Grace as well as the 2004 feature film Kinsey. The same year, Curry was tapped to star as King Arthur in the Monty Python-inspired musical by his old friend Eric Idle: Spamalot debuted in Chicago and became a smash hit that would play Broadway and London between 2004 and 2007.

Ever busy, Curry recurred as a serial killer on CBS’ Criminal Minds, starred in Tom Stoppard’s UK production of Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead, and, in 2012, in a production of Idle’s comedy What About Dick at Los Angeles’ Orpheum Theatre, alongside a cast that also included Eddie Izzard, Billy Connolly Tracey Ullman and Russell Brand.

But that year also brought the catastrophic stroke, beginning the health challenges that would last his lifetime. He would occasionally take work in voice projects, benefit readings and cabaret performances, all the while practicing the physical and speech therapy that aided in his recovery.

And he continued to make frequent appearances at sci-fi and fantasy conventions for fans who never stopped loving his Rocky Horror creation, or him.

Curry never married and has no children. Information on survivors was not immediately available.
