Arlen Dean Snyder obit

Arlen Snyder Obituary

He was not on the list.

Arlen Dean Snyder, affectionately known as Snar by those closest to him, died on July 5, 2024 at the age of 91 in Seattle, Washington.

The son of Glenn and Sylvia Snyder, Arlen was born on March 5, 1933, in Rice, Kan. The family were tenant farmers around the area, and Arlen graduated from Leon High School with the class of 1951. He attended the University of Iowa the summer of his graduation and won a fellowship to Tulsa University. He then served two years with the U.S. Army before returning to college.

He graduated from the University of Tulsa in 1957, where he majored in drama and speech and was a member of the Tulsa University players. Snyder subsequently returned to the University of Iowa to graduate in 1959 with a Master of Arts in Theater. While there, he also taught dramatic interpretation as a speech department assistant.

During his tenure at the University of Tulsa, Snyder wrote a prize winning one-act play, Sam, which the college company later produced. A true lover of theater, Snyder was involved in all aspects front and back of the house. He had the honor of working in several theaters around the world, including but not limited to, the Margo Jones Theater, Actors Playhouse, The Old Globe Theater, and The Old Imperial Hotel.

Snyder was a member of the Pittsburgh Playhouse, and of the Imperial Players in Cripple Creek, Colorado. He went on to act in several shows on Broadway (1965-1977) as well as to appear in several television and movie productions, most notably, Heartbreak Ridge (1986), One Life to Live (1968), and Dallas (1978).

Snyder was a staunch advocate for equal rights and a longtime supporter of the American College Fund and Southern Poverty Law Center, among other non-profit organizations. A self-proclaimed hermit, and lifelong New Yorker at heart, he begrudgingly moved to Seattle from Block Island, Rhode Island in 2019 to be close to his family. Beloved father and grandfather, he is survived by his brother, Merle Snyder, his wife, Frances Migliaccio, daughter Kimble, son-in-law, Cuong and his four grandchildren.

At his request, no formal services will be held.

It's not how a man dies, it's how he lives that counts. -- Bernard Shaw, The Doctor's Dilemma.
