Skatalites saxophonist Lester Sterling has Died

 He was not on the list.


Lester ‘Ska’ Sterling, Jamaican saxophonist and founding member of The Skatalites band has died at age 87.

The Skatalites Band in Facebook post on Tuesday (May 16) shared that: “It’s a sad day for all of us with the passing of our legendary founder and original saxophonist Lester “Ska” Sterling. Our heart goes out to the family, the fans and to all who were very close to him.”

The Skatalites added that: “We celebrate his greatness and his contribution of being one of the pioneers of Ska and reggae music. He has left a legacy for now and future generations to follow and we will continue to preserve it stage by stage.”

Sterling is said to have passed away on Tuesday. The cause of his death is not yet known.

The saxophonist who is also known as Mr Versatile is the last remaining member of the original Skatalites hornsmen.

Sterling is recognised both locally and internationally for his musical talent and have played with other bands such as Byron Lee and Dragonares.

In 1988, he was awarded the order of distinction for his contribution to the popularization of ska and reggae music.
