Winston Stona has died

He was not on the list.

KINGSTON, Jamaica— Businessman and actor Winston Stona died on Tuesday. He was 82.

Stona was known for his roles in The Harder They Come and Cool Runnings, and was affectionately called the ‘King of Condiments’ due to his role as the co-founder of the Busha Browne Company which produces sauces, jellies and condiments.

A close friend of the Jamaica Observer Table Talk Food Awards, Stona co-chaired the event on numerous occasions and was himself the recipient of the Table Talk Food Awards Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.

Food Awards Chair, Novia McDonald-Whyte, who said she spoke to Stona last week, hailed him as a national treasure, a man who lent his full support to each initiative be it food, fashion or Page 2.

“We spoke of the new date of the Awards and, although one could sense he was very weak, he chuckled and promised to try his best to be there. His larger than life persona will very much be present,” McDonald-Whyte said.

Independent film producer Justine Henzell, who oversees the legacy of The Harder They Come, said Stona wasn’t well and had been in the hospital. She went on to state that he passed away on Tuesday, at about 1 a.m. He was 82 years of age

“He was an amazing storyteller, charming and gracious. And he was a wonderful family friend. We will miss him dearly,” she added, noting that her mother, Sally Henzell, was a very dear friend of his.

Not only was he a stalwart in the condiment industry, bringing freshness, authenticity and ingenuity to his Busha Browne's line of jerk sauces, marinades, jellies, preserves and chutneys, Stona is best known for his roles in the movies The Harder They Come, One Love, No Place Like Home and Cool Runnings.
