Joseph Ravetz Obituary
He was not on the list.
Joseph Ravetz
October 13, 1939 - February 8, 2016
Resident of Rio Del Mar
Joe passed peacefully on February 8, 2016 at his home in Rio
Del Mar surrounded by his wife of 36 years, Harriet Maglin, and son, Adam
Maglin-Ravetz, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Joe and his
wife Harriet moved to Santa Cruz 4 1/2 years ago after having lived in Venice,
CA for many years. Living by the ocean had great import and Rio Del Mar became
home immediately.
Joe was born in Philadelphia, PA, but grew up in Los Angeles
after the family moved there when he was four. Joe earned a BFA from UCLA and
enjoyed a productive career in the LA television/film industry as an editor and
television producer/director. He loved traveling the country to produce stories
for Unsolved Mysteries. Joe had a passion for photography and in his early
years shot album covers with Iron Butterfly's Heavy being the most famous.
After his career slowed, Joe returned to his love of photography. His
photography captured more than physical form, as he was able to sense and shoot
the very fabric of life in all of its glory and shadow. That fabric was
displayed in how he captured the soul of individuals - the LA Homeless standing
on street corners holding their signs or the solitude of San Francisco bus
riders sitting among the mass of humanity. Joe's other focus was capturing the
beauty of motion. His photographs of musicians on Venice Beach to the graceful
movement of ballet dancers in LA and Santa Cruz to stylish women in great
looking high heels captured that beauty. His photography was exhibited in
numerous galleries in Los Angeles, Santa Cruz and Pacific Grove. To view his
work, visit www.joeravetz.com.
Joe embraced the Santa Cruz community by volunteering as a
docent for Santa Cruz Symphony's classroom visitation program, and serving as a
gallery host at the Museum of Art and History. The Santa Cruz art community
embraced him. His work was displayed at Open Studios, Davenport, Blitzer, and
Michaelangelo galleries, in the Catamaran literary magazine, and at the Art
League. He had the pleasure of photographing Santa Cruz Symphony's maestro,
Daniel Stewart, and several of those shots are used in their publicity
campaigns and the current symphony's season program and website.
As well as his wife Harriet and son Adam, Joe is survived by
his brother, Ted Ravetz (Seattle). Joe will be missed by many, but his legacy
will remain through his magnificent photography. The Rio Del Mar beach, our
magnificent northern coast and the majestic redwood forests were places that
gave him great comfort, pleasure and spiritual renewal. He always felt blessed
to live in this splendor.
A celebration of his life will occur in late spring. Donations in his honor can be made to Hospice of Santa Cruz.
