Kirk Scott Obituary
He was not on the list.
Kirk Scott left us Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, after a long, amazing fight with the cancer that finally forced his hand. To say he battled doesn't do justice to his fierce determination to live life on his own terms. The warrior survived almost nine years against odds that offered little hope from the very beginning. He thrived. Born in 1936 in the Oklahoma Dust Bowl, Kirk became an actor in kindergarten when, as part of a silent tableau, he sang nonstop at the top of his lungs. He remained a performer to the end. By sixth grade his family had moved to Ohio, where he eventually earned a degree in theatre from Ohio State University. Upon graduation, he served in the U.S. Army in Germany as one of only eight troops to carry the designation "Special Services," '? they entertained in shows throughout Europe. Discharged with a commendation, Kirk moved to Los Angeles to begin a career that spanned movies, television, stage and over 100 commercials. His last major role was as Christian Slater's father in the cult movie "Heathers." Kirk retired with a pension from the Screen Actors Guild, a notable and rare achievement in a difficult business. He was proud of his service to the Santa Monica Yacht Club, having become its Commodore in 1989. Kirk and Jan retired to Arroyo Grande, where they fought the political fights they thought mattered. He served on Arroyo Grande Parks and Rec. Commission for a year and the Traffic Commission for seven years, five as chair. He served four years on the Citizens Transportation Advisory Committee at the county, two as chair, and was on the board of Arroyo Grande in Bloom. His last unfinished assignment was on the Arroyo Grande Charter City Advisory Committee. In 2000, he took on the Presidency of the South County Historical Society and served for six years, where he brought the society into the computer age. He imagined and then created the Barn Museum in Arroyo Grande's Heritage Square. After the cancer diagnosis, chemo, surgery, more chemo and nearly 80,000 miles in his RV stopping for treatments as necessary, Kirk, with ongoing Stage IV cancer, settled back into life in Arroyo Grande. He acted in the Historic Readers Theatre shows Jan initiated in 2011 and returned to the Presidency for 2012 and 2013. One of his happiest times was with The Spot Theatre early in 2013, where he performed in "Tuesdays With Morrie," his last return to the stage in a story that carried the weight of life. A special thank you and much love to Dr. David Palchak whose wisdom and skill allowed Kirk to navigate through the disease for as long as he did, and wife, Marie and the gifted staff who assisted his survival with their care, devotion and friendship. Kirk leaves wife, Jan; daughters Dena Souriall (Rob), Kira Beth Dadisman, Heidileigh Cochlin (Don); son, Bryan Dougall; grandkids Shane, Devon, Bryce, Hailea, Aidan, Anita and Matt; brother, Kent Dadisman (Marie); niece, Kristan; cousins Ann Aronson (Don) and Gennie Roeder (Jerry); all beloved family to him. Services will be private, to be followed next year by a memorial celebration for all. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the South County Historical Society, which knows no other form of support; or the Jacqualyn Palchak Cancer Fund.
