WBA Mourns the Passing of Luis “Lumumba” Estaba
He was not on the list.
The boxing world has lost a legend. Venezuelan former world champion Luis “Lumumba” Estaba passed away on Sunday, February 16, at the age of 86.
Born in Güiria, Venezuela, Estaba carved out a remarkable career in the ring, ultimately reaching the pinnacle of the sport as a world champion. He made his professional debut in 1967 and hung up his gloves 11 years later, in 1978.
Estaba finished his career with an impressive record of 41 wins, 9 losses, and 2 draws, with 27 of those victories coming by knockout. A true pioneer in the light flyweight division, he became world champion in 1975 with a knockout victory over Paraguay’s Rafael Lovera. He then successfully defended his title 11 times before losing it in February 1978 to Mexico’s Freddy Castillo.
Later that year, in July, Estaba reclaimed championship glory, defeating Thailand’s Sor Vorasingh before retiring at the age of 40.
The World Boxing Association extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the entire boxing community. The sport has lost a true icon, but his legacy will live on forever.
