‘Lord Of The Rings’ Star Ian Holm Dies At 88
He was not on the list.
British actor Sir Ian Holm—best known for key roles in Lord
of the Rings, Chariots of Fire and Alien—has died at the age of 88 after a long
battle with Parkinson’s.
KEY FACTS
The actor died “peacefully” in a London hospital from a
Parikson’s-related illness, according to a Friday statement from his agent.
During his long and successful career, Holm proved his
versatility in film, theater and TV, telling the Los Angeles Times in 2000 “I’m
never the same twice.”
Over the course of 13 years, Holm portrayed the hobbit Bilbo
Baggins in all four of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films.
Holm is also known for playing Ash in the 1979 science-fiction
horror film Alien.
Other roles, like coach Sam Mussabini in 1981’s Chariots of
Fire earned him critical acclaim, including an Oscar nomination for best
supporting actor, a BAFTA Film Award for best-supporting artists and a Cannes
Film Festival award.
key quote
“He was a genius of stage and screen, winning multiple
awards and loved by directors, audiences and his colleagues alike,” reads the
statement from Holm’s representative. “His sparkling wit always accompanied a
mischievous twinkle in his eye. Charming, kind and ferociously talented, we
will miss him hugely."
