Detto Mariano, who composed songs for Celentano, Mina and Battisti, has died
He was 82 years old. Official arranger of the Clan, since the 80s he has written soundtracks for the cinema. In 2006 he received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement
He was not on the list.
Said Mariano, author and arranger of hits by Adriano Celentano's Clan and then of many songs by Mina and Battisti, died at the age of 82 in Milan where he had been hospitalized fifteen days ago for the consequences of the coronavirus. He was in intensive care but his conditions were considered stable and no one expected a sudden worsening. His main activity was songs but starting from the 80s Mariano wrote about thirty film soundtracks including the one for Yuppi Du , for Eccezziunale veramente and for Il ragazzo di campagna . In 2006 he was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement.
In addition to his work as an arranger, starting with Il ragazzo della via Gluck also for Celentano, Nel sole by Al Bano, Insieme and Viva lei for Mina and Emozioni for Lucio Battisti, Mariano had written about forty songs, including Ciao amore from 1961, one of Adriano Celentano's biggest hits. Among his most famous songs as an author there is also L'immensità , written with Mogol and at the center of a long dispute with Don Backy, who claimed full authorship, recalling that at the time he had no way of being able to deposit it with Siae as he was not yet registered as an author.
“Just a few minutes ago, my friend and former drummer
Riziero Bixio, communicated to me some grim news, namely the death of my friend
and arranger of many of my hits, Detto Mariano”, wrote Don Backy on Facebook.
“Needless to say, the news chilled me. Only fools could think otherwise, based
on our tumultuous events on the authorship of the songs. Nevertheless, I will
not be so hypocritical as not to remain firm in my usual positions towards him.
By now, there will be no more time to convince him to return to me the part
that was annexed of those songs, without having the title, and I hope that the
weight of that story and of the earth will still be light on him”.
Even with Celentano he was divided by a lawsuit still underway in Milan regarding Prisencolinensinainciusol, the piece for which Mariano claimed authorship with regard to the music. The composer and arranger has always been convinced that "a good arranger, when he does his job well, is also the author of a piece and his name should appear next to those of the author of the lyrics and the author of the music". Thanks to a petition he launched about ten years ago and signed by numerous Italian musicians and arrangers, since March 2010 Siae has recognized this right for arrangers in all those cases in which "the arranger, in the final draft of an original work, has made a creative and compositional intervention".
Detto Mariano, registered as Mariano Detto at the registry office of Monte Urano, in the province of Fermo, had met Adriano Celentano during his military service. So when Molleggiato decided to create the Clan label Celentano involved Mariano, who had studied piano, in the role of arranger and job after job he became the official arranger of the Clan. The first one he made was for the song Sei resta sola which, sung by Celentano, achieved great success. Afterwards, from April 1962 to December 1967, he made the arrangements for all the artists of the Clan, from Ricky Gianco to Don Backy, to Gino Santercole. Starting in 1968, after leaving the Clan, Mariano began collaborating with Lucio Battisti with the arrangement of fundamental songs such as Mi ritorni in mente, Acqua azzurra, acqua chiara, Fiori rosa, fiori di pesco and with Ricordi for which he worked on the songs of Bobby Solo ( Zingara and Siesta ), of Milva ( Un sorriso ), l'Equipe 84 ( Tutta mia la città ). And then with the Camaleonti ( L'ora dell'amore , Applausi ).
Not secondary, in addition to writing soundtracks, is the signature of theme songs for cartoons including Mazinga, Temple and Tam Tam, Judo Boy, Gundam, Astroganga, Piccola Lulu, I bon bon di Lilly . Said Mariano lived between Milan and Rome, where he worked and owned a house full of memories and memorabilia in the Prati area. On September 9, 2011 he was named honorary citizen of Poggio Bustone, the birthplace of Lucio Battisti.
