Ron Waller obit

Football player and coach Ron Waller has died

Professional Football Player, Coach. Born Ronald Bowles Waller, he was raised in Delaware, where he attended Laurel High School. He played collegiate football at the University of Maryland, prior to being selected by the Los Angeles Rams during the 2nd Round of the 1955 NFL Draft. His impact on the league was immediate as he produced career highs with 716 rushing yards and 7 touchdown, as he achieved Pro-Bowl honors during his rookie year in 1955. In 1957, he led the league with a 76 yard run from scrimmage. After the American Football League was formed, Waller held the distinction as being on the roster of the Los Angeles Chargers during their first inaugural season (1960). After retiring as a player, he remained in the Los Angeles area and worked in the motion picture industry. He appeared in the film "Bedtime Story" (1964), which starred Marlon Brando.

Waller served as special teams coach, prior to succeeding Harland Svare as head coach of the San Diego Chargers in 1973. He went on to serve as head coach of the Philadelphia Bell of the World Football League in 1974. Additionally, he served as an NFL scout. Waller was inducted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame in 1977. Waller was also the head coach of the Wilmington Clippers and the Norfolk Neptunes of the Atlantic Coast Football League.
