Tony Award-winning actor Philip Bosco, of Jersey City, dies at 88
He was not on the list.
Philip Bosco, the Tony Award-winning actor and Jersey City native known for his roles in films “Working Girl” and “The Savages,” has died. He was 88.
The actor’s daughter, Celia Bosco, said her father died Monday night at his home in Haworth, in Bergen County. She says her father had complications with dementia, which is commonly caused by Alzheimer’s disease.
Bosco was a Broadway veteran who won a Tony Award in 1989 for best actor for his role as the head of an opera company in the comedy “Lend Me a Tenor.” He received nominations for his performances in “The Rape of the Belt,” ''Heartbreak House," ''You Never Can Tell" and “Moon Over Buffalo.” He was also been honored with a number of Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards, an Obie Award for lifetime achievement and induction in the Theatre Hall of Fame in 1998.
Bosco starred in a 2004 production of “Twelve Angry Men” and also had an extensive television and film career.
Before acting, Bosco worked in a carnival as a trailer truck driver. And before the odd jobs, Bosco grew up in the Jersey City Heights. He attended St. John’s elementary school and later St. Peter’s Prep.
In a 2006 interview with The Jersey Journal prior to giving the commencement speech for St. Peter’s University, Bosco talked about his upbringing.
“It was the best childhood I could envision," he said. “I had the best time growing up in the Heights, which was one of the best neighborhoods. I knew people in blocks of each other and had friends all over. My wife and I go back there all the time. With the exception of going to school in Washington, I have always lived in New Jersey. I may have worked in New York but I have always loved New Jersey, and that’s where my permanent address will be.”
It was at St. Peter’s Prep, under the guidance of retired actor James Marr, that Bosco developed his lifelong love of the theater. With the encouragement of Marr, Bosco attended The Catholic University of America and joined its renowned drama department.
Bosco is a member of the inaugural Saint Peter’s Prep Hall of Fame class in 2006. He returned to the school in 2010 to see the student production of The Merchant of Venice, which he performed at the school in 1947, said Jim Horan the school’s vice president for planning and principal giving. Afterwards Bosco spent hours talking with the drama students, Horan said,
“Philip Bosco is one of the people that make the Prep Class of 1948 one of the greatest classes in the history of St. Peter’s Prep,” Horan, said, noting that the school’s two largest donors are both members of that class. “As a person and as a professional, Phil represented the very best qualities of our Jesuit education, and we’ve always been very proud to count him among our alumni.”
