Roy Dotrice obit

Roy Dotrice, ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Amadeus’ Actor, Dies at 94

He was not on the list.

Veteran British actor Roy Dotrice, best known to U.S. audiences for his role as Wisdom Hallyne the pyromancer on Season 2 of “Game of Thrones,” died Monday at his home in London. He was 94.

Dotrice’s role on “Game of Thrones” Season 2 was not his first time working with George R.R. Martin, author of the book series which the television show is based on. Dotrice first gained recognition for recording the audio books for each installment in Martin’s famed series, “A Song of Fire and Ice.” In 2004, he earned a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for the greatest number of characters voiced by a single actor in an audio book: 224 characters, all of which he voiced for “A Game of Thrones,” the first novel in the series. The audio book is a staggering 33 hours long.

That 2004 win was not the first time Dotrice was honored in the Guinness Book of World Records, either. The groundbreaking artist broke the record for greatest number of solo performances (1,782) with his 1960s run as John Aubrey in the one-man show “Brief Lives.” Before his long career in the entertainment business, Dotrice served in the Royal Air Force during WWII and was imprisoned in a German POW camp.

He went on to great success as an actor on television, film, theater, and radio. Among his achievements were a Tony award for best featured actor in a play for his role in the Broadway revival of “A Moon for the Misbegotten” and a British Academy Television award for best actor for his performance in “Misleading Cases.” In film, Dotrice is most well known for his portrayal in 1984’s “Amadeus” as Leopold Mozart, the famous composer’s father.
