Child Actor Philip Hurlic has died

Philip Hurlic had an extensive career as a child actor before appearing in a few Our Gang Shorts. He appeared in the Baby Burlesk series with Shirley Temple, and some Penrod movies which also featured Jerry Tucker. Based on a letter received from Philip's daughter, Zee on July 22, 2014, he had passed away peacefully on July 7, 2014 surrounded by his family.

Hurlic appeared in a number of films in the 1930s and early 1940s. Hurlic's income from his film work was used to support his East Los Angeles family. Hurlic's earliest roles were as a toddler in the Baby Burlesks series, which starred a pre-fame Shirley Temple. His largest roles in film include Little Jim in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938), Verman Diggs in the Penrod films, and Zeke in Zenobia (1939). He also appeared in a number of Our Gang comedies alongside another child actor from his neighborhood, Buckwheat (Billie Thomas).

He also had a significant role in the Penrod films as Verman Diggs with fellow child actors such as Billy Mauch, Bobby Mauch, Harry Watson, Frank Craven, Spring Blyington, Charles Haughton, Jackie Morrow, Charley Foy, Benny Barlett, Jay Adler, Bernice Pilot and Robert Homans.

He was in the movie Green Pastures, a film that showed Bible Stories with black actors, with Rex Ingram, Oscar Polk, Willie Best and Eddie "Rochester" Anderson.

He retired from film business in 1942 after 30 films.
