Jean-Michel Damase was a French pianist and composer, born on January 27, 1928 in Bordeaux and died on April 21, 2013. He received the Grand Prix Musical de la SACD and the Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris for his entire body of work.

The son of harpist Micheline Kahn, who created works by Gabriel Fauré and Maurice Ravel, Jean-Michel Damase grew up in a musical environment.

A student of Alfred Cortot, he joined the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, graduating with a unanimous first prize in piano at the age of 15. He then began a concert career, notably with the Colonne concerts, the Société des concerts du Conservatoire, and the Orchestre Radio-Symphonique. He performed with Pierre Barbizet, Lily Laskine, and Jean-Pierre Rampal.

He won the Prix de Rome in 1947. He is buried next to his mother in the Valmondois cemetery (Val d'Oise)

Operas:

• Colombe, a “lyrical comedy” in four acts and 6 tableaux, libretto by Jean Anouilh based on his play, premiered on May 5, 1961 at the Bordeaux Opera with Maria Murano, directed by Roger Lalande, sets and costumes by Jean-Denis Malclès;

• La Tendre Éléonore, a one-act comic opera, libretto by Luis Masson, premiered on January 18, 1962 at the Marseille Opera;

• Eugène le mystérieuse, a grand spectacle musical comedy in two acts and 20 tableaux, libretto by Marcel Achard based on Eugène Sue, premiered on February 7, 1964 at the Théâtre du Châtelet.
