Dawn of the Dead’s ‘Helicopter Zombie’ Jim Krut has passed away
He was not on the list.
Horror fans are mourning the loss of one of George A. Romero‘s most memorable undead performers. Jim Krut, the actor best known for playing the unforgettable Helicopter Zombie in Romero’s 1978 zombie classic Dawn of the Dead, has passed away. News of his death was confirmed on his official Facebook page with the brief statement:
“I am bereft to share with you that Jim died last night. May your garden of memories offer you the goodness of his this morning.”
Although his screen time in Dawn of the Dead was brief, Krut’s gruesome death scene became one of the film’s most famous moments. His zombie is drawn toward the sound of a helicopter before wandering beneath its spinning blades… which doesn’t go well for him. The sequence has frequently been cited among the greatest zombie deaths ever put on screen and remains a fan favorite nearly fifty years later.
Krut embraced his place in horror history, proudly referring to himself as the “Helicopter Zombie” and regularly appearing at horror conventions to meet fans of Romero’s work. He remained closely connected to the Living Dead community, attending genre events whenever possible and celebrating the enduring legacy of Dawn of the Dead.
Just weeks ago, Krut revealed that he had suffered an unexpected health emergency that forced him to cancel his appearance at Living Dead Weekend, a fan celebration held at the Monroeville Mall, where much of Dawn of the Dead was filmed. In a message to fans, he wrote, “This zombie is still above ground, but needs to slow down, even more.”
Krut explained that he had been hospitalized and would require additional consultations, treatment, scans, and possibly physical therapy. Despite his disappointment over missing the event, he encouraged fans to attend Living Dead Weekend, visit the Living Dead Museum, and continue supporting the community that has kept Romero’s films alive for generations. He also thanked event organizer Kevin Kriess and everyone involved with Living Dead Weekend for preserving the legacy of Dawn of the Dead and bringing together fans from around the world.
While Dawn of the Dead remains the role most horror fans instantly recognize, Krut continued acting for decades after Romero’s legendary classic. In recent years he appeared in independent genre films including Blood and Breakfast, The Only Ones, Coffintooth, Heavy Duty Man, Z-ero, Full Moon Fever, and Remnants. He was also active behind the scenes as a producer on several independent horror projects and still had multiple productions in various stages of development.
Dawn of the Dead continues to be regarded as one of the greatest zombie films ever made, inspiring generations of filmmakers and helping define the modern zombie genre. Although Krut’s appearance lasted only a single scene, it became one of the movie’s most unforgettable images, ensuring that the Helicopter Zombie would remain an enduring part of horror history.
