New Mexico has lost one of its most popular music legends.
A family member has confirmed that Al Hurricane Jr., known as El Godson by many of his fans, passed away on Tuesday.
In a statement, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham said,
"He was a true New Mexican entertainer who delighted generations. From the
time he first stepped on stage as a child to every performance that followed,
Al Hurricane Jr. gave us joy, pride, and a sound that is uniquely, beautifully
ours."
Al Hurricane Jr. was 66 years old.
He is known as "El Godson" of New Mexico music, a
nickname which was inherited from his father Al Hurricane, who is considered
"The Godfather" of New Mexico music. He was his father's protégé,
having created numerous solo albums, and contributed songs such as "Flor
de Las Flores" to New Mexico's unique style of Spanish music.
Al Hurricane Jr. was born Alberto Nelson Sanchez Jr. to Alberto Nelson Sanchez and Nettie M. Fleming on October 30, 1959, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He began performing music at the age of five, and performed the song Love Potion #9 during his first performance at the Albuquerque Civic Auditorium.
His death at the age of 66 was announced on May 19, 2026
