Serbian Tennis in Shock as Ex-Pro Tatjana Ječmenica, Former Top 80 Player, Killed in Road Accident at 47

Sad news in the tennis world. On Friday, February 13, former professional player Tatjana Ječmenica died in a car accident near the capital Belgrade at the age of 47.

Her husband, who was in the car at the time of the accident, has been placed in an induced coma. Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dačic confirmed the information in recent hours.

"One of the best tennis players in Serbia's history and former national team coach, Tatjana Ječmenica, lost her life this evening (Friday) in a serious car accident near Belgrade.

The final farewell to a dear friend and colleague is unexpected and premature," Dačic stated in recent hours, according to comments gathered by Tribuna.

World No. 72 and Fed Cup Captaincy for Ječmenica

Born in Yugoslavia in July 1978, Ječmenica won six ITF circuit titles in singles, reaching a career-high ranking of No. 72 in 1996. While she never won a trophy on the main tour, she also reached the second round of the 1995 US Open and 1996 Roland-Garros.

Her career was short, as she turned professional in 1993 at the age of 15, before announcing her retirement at 27 in 2005, after playing a few doubles matches. Her last appearance in a singles tournament, however, dates back to 1998.

After her career, Ječmenica did not leave the tennis world. She founded her own academy in the 2000s, accommodating students aged 5 to 20 in Novi Sad, her hometown.

Finally, between 2014 and 2020, she served as captain of the Serbian team in the Fed Cup (the former name of the current BJK Cup). The entire TennisTemple editorial team joins in the grief of her loved ones and extends its deepest condolences to her family and friends.
