Lynyrd Skynyrd founding member Larry Junstrom dead at 70
He was not on the list.
Larry Junstrom, an original member of the iconic Southern rock group Lynyrd Skynyrd, has died at age 70.
The bassist’s death was announced on Facebook by his former band .38 Special, which Junstrom joined after leaving Lynyrd Skynyrd and performed with for parts of four decades.
“He rocked arenas all over the world and succeeded in living his dream,” reads the tribute posted Sunday on the .38 Special page. “He was truly one of a kind, a congenial traveling companion and a great friend to all with a humorous slant on life that always kept our spirits high — a kind man with a big heart for everyone who crossed his path. There will never be another like him.”
A cause of death has not been disclosed for Junstrom, who was born in Pittsburgh in 1949.
Along with Ronnie Van Zant, Garry Rossington, Bob Burns and Allen Collins, Junstrom was a founding member of Lynyrd Skynyard in the 1960s but left before the band released its first album, “Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd,” in 1973.
He joined .38 Special in 1977, playing bass for the Southern rock group, which had formed a few years earlier. He left the group in 2014 when he retired.
“We are sending our devoted love, strength and comfort to his wife Thania and Larry’s family,” reads the .38 Special post on Facebook. “We will miss our friend and partner.”
