Peter Brace, stuntman and actor who worked with Sean Connery and Roger Moore – obituary
Giant stuntman and actor who doubled for the biggest names in the business but hated dressing up as Chewbacca in Star Wars
He was not on the list.
For 35 years Peter Brace performed frightening stunts, such as hanging over the edge of buildings and standing up on aircraft. The job he feared more than any other, however, was working as a double for the hapless Wookiee Chewbacca in two Star Wars films, especially if he was “caught short” while in costume.
Brace, who was 6ft 4in tall and granite-chinned, described “dressing up in that bloody dog costume” as the worst experience of a career in films that spanned more than 40 years. “It was too hot, and if you wanted a pee it was a two-man job.”
By the time he climbed into the furry Chewbacca outfit for the first time in Star Wars (1977), Brace was a veteran of several James Bond films. He performed stunts in the first 007 film, Dr No (1962), and in From Russia with Love the next year. In the opening scene of Goldfinger (1964) Brace played the oil refinery guard whom Bond, in the person of Sean Connery’s stunt double Alf Joint, jumps and kicks in the face. In You Only Live Twice (1967) he was a stunt driver in the breathtaking car chase as 007 is pursued by Blofeld’s deadly assassins in an open-topped sports car. Later in the film he was one of the ninja warriors who abseil down ropes into the volcano concealing a secret rocket base.
In a job with a high fatality rate — dozens of stuntmen have been killed working on films — Brace regarded the existential brinkmanship with stoicism and gritted his teeth through fractured ribs. There were always more cars to crash, buildings to scale and fights to stage.
Peter Brace was born in 1924 in Weston-super-Mare, to Joseph Herman, a tailor of military uniforms, and Eliza Jane Brace, a housemaid. His father died when he was four, and with his mother he moved to Weybridge, and then Kentish Town, London.
He wished to be an actor from an early age, and made his film debut dancing the jitterbug in Ken Annakin’s 1947 postwar comedy Holiday Camp, which was shot at Butlin’s on the North Yorkshire coast. He also demonstrated that he was more than just a wooden, muscle-bound extra by playing a Nazi soldier in Reach for the Sky (1956) and, most memorably, a butch-looking schoolmistress in the 1957 film Blue Murder at St Trinian’s.
His interest in becoming an action man was stirred when he appeared in the 1952 film Ivanhoe. While Brace was playing a medieval archer, he watched fascinated as the stuntman Paddy Ryan dived from a 70ft tower, a picture of insouciance. He had his own taste of danger after pretending he could ride a horse — and holding on for dear life.
After several more years playing small parts, Brace made his debut as a stuntman in the 1961 Godzilla-inspired monster movie Gorgo.
From then on, whether you wanted a scowling bad guy or a swashbuckling hero, Brace was the man: a hard-bitten prison inmate in Mackintosh Man (1973), a mafia henchman in Curse of the Pink Panther (1983) and a dour hangman in Sherlock Holmes and the Prince of Crime (1990) were suitably tough-edged notches on his résumé.
The ruggedly good-looking Brace was noticed by actresses on set, if not always by casting directors. Ingrid Pitt, the Hammer Horror star who became friends with Brace after they worked together on Where Eagles Dare (1968), described him as “big, lumbering and charismatic”. He is survived by his partner, Wendy Smith, an actress whom he met in 1983 on the set of the television series The Last Days of Pompeii, and by two children from his previous marriage to Patricia Murphy: David, an electrical construction manager, and Tina, a housewife.
Brace, who enjoyed his work for its variety of roles and locations, continued working until his 70th birthday. His last stunt work came in Mel Gibson’s 1995 Scottish warrior epic, Braveheart. If studio insurance policies had covered him, he would probably have continued much longer.
His ability as a horseman and swordsman had broadened the scope of his work and prolonged his career. His equestrian skills were seen alongside Michael Caine in Kidnapped (1971), and his sword fight as Clancy Brown’s stunt double in Highlander (1986), a film in which he renewed acquaintance with Connery, is rated as one of the finest captured on screen. Indeed, he sharpened his swordsmanship by touring with a team of medieval jousters.
In real life Brace was a gentle soul, who enjoyed golf and horse riding. According to Vic Armstrong, a friend and colleague who wrote an autobiography titled The True Adventures of the World’s Greatest Stuntman, Brace was a thoughtful man with a dry wit. “People would find themselves brought back to earth in two quietly delivered words.”
Peter Brace, actor and stuntman, was born on August 30, 1924. He died on October 29, 2018, aged 94.
