Dewey Martin Has Died
He was not on the list.
Dewey Dallas Martin was an American film and television actor, who, for Disney, played the titular role in Daniel Boone as part of the Walt Disney Presents anthology show. He also appeared as Lester White in Savage Sam, the sequel to Old Yeller.
Martin was born in Katemcy, Texas and, as a teenager, he lived in Florence, Alabama. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1940 and was enlisted for pre-flight training in 1942 during World War II. Following the completion of his training, Martin served as a fighter pilot in the Pacific Theater of the war where he was shot down in 1945 and was held as a prisoner of war until Japan's surrender.
Following his discharge, Martin entered the theatre in 1946 and within three years was tapped to play one of the young toughs in Knock on Any Door. It soon lead to roles in The Thing from Another World, The Big Sky, The Desperate Hours, Land of the Pharaohs, Ten Thousand Bedrooms, Prisoner of War, Men of the Fighting Lady, The Longest Day, Flight to Fury, Man on the Beach, and Assault on the Wayne. Martin also worked extensively in television, making guest appearances on shows, such as Climax!, The Loretta Young Show, Zane Gray Theatre, The Twilight Zone, Burke's Law, The Outer Limits, Laramie, Hawaii Five-O, Mission Impossible, I Spy, Police Story, Joe Forrester, The F.B.I., Mannix, and Death Valley Days.
Martin retired from acting in 1978 and passed away in March of 2018. He was married to singer Peggy Lee.
Martin joined the U.S. Navy in 1940 and served as a Grumman
F6F Hellcat pilot in the Pacific Theater of the war after pilot training in
Dallas, Texas, in mid-1944. He was shot down in 1945 and was held as a prisoner
of war until Japan's surrender.
In the film The Longest Day (1962) he appeared in only two
scenes, as Sgt. Wilder.
On October 21, 2018, he was honored with a Sketch of the Day
caricature on the website Star Portraits by a United States based artist known
as Odoxesky.
Frequently erroneously reported as the brother of actor
Strother Martin. The two are not related.
Upon his death, he was cremated and his ashes scattered at sea.
