Former Maple Leafs forward Tod Sloan, 89, dies
He was not on the list.
Maple Leafs great Tod Sloan, who tied the clinching game of the 1951 Stanley Cup final that Bill Barilko won in overtime, has passed away.
The 89-year-old had been living in Sutton, Ont., and recently was visited by an NHL alumni group which presented him with the franchise’s century anniversary blazer. Sloan, who was voted 38th on the list of top 100 Leafs, was a Quebec-born cousin of Dave Keon, No. 1 on that list.
A playmaking centre who earned the nickname ‘Slinker’, Sloan did not get his name on the 1949 Cup having not participated in the playoffs his rookie year. But in 1951 he led the team with 31 goals and added nine more points in the playoffs.
None were more important than the two he scored in Game 5, the second coming with barely 20 seconds to go in regulation time. Ted Kennedy and Max Bentley worked the puck to the net where a shot off the post came right to Sloan for the 2-2 goal. Barilko did the rest, his last goal before disappearing in a plane crash.
Sloan went on to be a dominant Leaf in the 1950s, a second-team all-star with young George Armstrong and Dick Duff as his linemates.
“He was a better player than me and I’m more well known,” remarked Armstrong a couple of years ago.
Sloan had 346 points in 549 games and remains 26th in franchise scoring. He lasted long enough in the NHL to play on Chicago’s Cup team in 1961.
