Casting Director Rose Tobias Shaw Dies at 96
Her credits include TV’s 'The Prisoner' and Scorsese’s 'The Last Temptation of Christ,' and she gave Pierce Brosnan's career a big boost.
She was not on the list.
Rose Tobias Shaw, a casting director who worked on the British show The Prisoner and Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) and boosted the career of actor Pierce Brosnan, has died. She was 96.
Shaw died Oct. 27, the Telegraph newspaper in London reported. No other details of her death were immediately available.
After she saw Brosnan play a man kidnapped by the IRA in the 1980 film The Long Good Friday — he was in the movie for less than a minute — Shaw got the actor, then 29, a big part in the 1981 six-part ABC miniseries The Manions of America, a turning point in the career of the man who would go on to play James Bond.
Shaw gained the nickname “The Queen of the Miniseries” by casting other 1980s multi-episodic projects like The Bourne Identity, Till We Meet Again and Around the World in 80 Days.
Her credits include two more 1960s British TV series, Secret Agent and Man in a Suitcase, as well as the films Madhouse (1974), The Seven-Per-Cent Solution (1976), Equus (1977), The Wild Geese (1978), Otto Preminger’s last feature, The Human Factor (1979), Lassiter (1984) and The Jewel of the Nile (1985).
Born in Poland, she came with her parents and sister to New
York as a child. She was briefly engaged to acclaimed Broadway director and
choreographer Jerome Robbins before marrying British actor Maxwell Shaw. He
died in 1985.
