Markus Büchel obit

Liechtenstein's former head of government Büchel has died.

Former Liechtenstein Prime Minister Markus Büchel has died. The 54-year-old politician succumbed to a serious illness in Ruggell on Tuesday night, as announced by his family and the local community.

He was not on the list.

Ruggell – The deceased was head of Liechtenstein's five-member government for just under seven months: from May 26 to December 15, 1993. Büchel did not have an easy time. His party, the Progressive Citizens' Party, had abandoned him just 100 days after the election, accusing him of being uncooperative.

The trigger was a personnel decision in which Büchel had given preference to the candidate of the other major party, the Patriotic Union. Prince Hans-Adam II subsequently dissolved parliament and called for new elections.

Büchel retired from politics after his time as head of government. Since 2002, he had been the honorary consul of the Russian Federation in Liechtenstein.

Büchel attended high school in Eschen from 1972 to 1975 before completing an internship in the law firm of Alfred Bühler in Vaduz. From 1981 he studied law in the University of Bern and the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, where he graduated in 1986
